Letter
In
response to Tim Duggan’s reply to my letter concerning freedom. I was
referring to liberty in its simplest and basic sense, as defined
in my dictionary. It defines freedom as “liberty.” It defines
liberty as “free from bondage or restraint.” My statements were based
upon this definition of freedom, and only this definition. Nothing more
and nothing less. I did not grant it additional qualities, or supplement
it with other conditions. I did not make it “more than this.”
Consequently, I stand by the statements made in my letter. When viewed
in this manner, Freedom is not the grand prize in this game of life, it
is only the ticket that allows you to play the game. The grand prize in
this game is a state of affairs called Justice.

BYBSA Thanks its Many Volunteers
As baseball season winds down in Barnstead and playoffs are close at
hand, it is time to reflect back on the successes of the season and the
areas which need improvement.
A huge
thank you goes out to the dedicated staff and owners of Neva Dun Farm
and Pike Industries. The father and son team of Ken and Ezra Burt worked
tirelessly along with their dedicated staff for three days to recreate
Barnstead’s own field of dreams at the Route 126 ball fields, as well
as, grade and level out our parking area. Pike Industries made this work
possible with a generous donation of a 21 ton load of stone dust. We can
not express our gratitude enough for their dedication, time and donation
of supplies and equipment. Parent volunteers and players too numerous to
mention were in attendance to lend a hand, shovel, rake, or whatever was
needed. Many thanks to the person who generously donated food and
beverages for our volunteers. Your act of kindness did not go unnoticed.
It is
clear to see many things have been done right and there are always ways
in which we can improve. BYBSA is completely volunteer driven and is
always looking for interested folks to join join our dedicated board. To
find out how you can become involved, drop by a board meeting the 1st
Monday of every month during the off season at the Oscar Foss Memorial
Library at 6:30 pm. Hope to see some new faces there.

State Issues Cyanobacteria Warning for Locke Lake, Barnstead
An
elevated cyanobacteria cell concentration has been measured in Locke
Lake, Barnstead. Samples revealed that the state standard of 50% or
greater of the total cells from the bloom were identified as the
cyanobacteria Anabaena circinalis. As a result, the New Hampshire
Department of Environmental Services (DES) has issued a cyanobacteria
warning for those who recreate on Locke Lake. This warning is not based
on a toxin evaluation and is intended as a precautionary measure for
short term exposure. DES advises lake users to avoid contact with the
water in areas experiencing elevated cyanobacteria cell conditions
typically where lake water has a surface scum or blue-green flecks. DES
also advises pet owners to keep their pets out of any waters that have a
surface scum or blue-green or bright green flecks.
Lake
users should be on the lookout for cyanobacteria surface scums. Recent
sightings report congregations of the blue-green scum on the lake’s
edge.
DES
routinely monitors public beaches and public waters of the state for
cyanobacteria. DES monitors public waters issued cyanobacteria warnings
on a weekly basis until the cyanobacteria standards are again met.
Cyanobacteria are natural components of water bodies worldwide, but
blooms and surface scums may form when excess phosphorus is available to
the water. Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that are stored within the
cells but released upon cell death. Toxins can cause both acute and
chronic health effects ranging in severity from skin and mucous membrane
irritations, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea to liver and central nervous
system damage for humans and animals.
The June 11, 2009 warning will
remain in effect until additional samples reveal cyanobacteria levels
have diminished.
Visit the DES Beach Program website at
http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/wmb/beaches/index.htm
for photos and more information about cyanobacteria. Updates on
advisories and warnings may be obtained at
http://www2.des.state.nh.us/Advisories/Beaches/.
If you notice
anything resembling cyanobacteria, please refrain from wading, swimming,
or drinking the water. Keep all pets out of the water and contact DES
immediately. Please call DES to report a cyanobacteria bloom at

28 PAC) from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2009. The
