Locke Lakers
Submitted By Peggy Gingras
We Locke Lakers met July 14, 2009 for our
regular second Tuesday of the month meeting. As I have mentioned before,
we will be doing something different this month for our next meeting.
Instead of a morning meeting, we will be meeting Wednesday, July 29,
2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lodge. We are hoping a lot of you can join us.
We understand that many of you work and have families and cannot make a
morning meeting, but would like to join us and we would love to have
you.
We
discussed our “Christmas in July BBQ” on July 26, 2009 at the pavilion.
We will be having a fried chicken dinner and the menu sounds delicious.
We are also having a “Yankee Swap”, so we are asking each of you to
bring a $5.00 wrapped gift. There will be a charge of $2.00 to cover
dessert and drinks. If you are a non-member the charge will be $7.00 for
the whole dinner. Please call Vi or Paul Russell for further information
and if you plan to attend at 776-4454. If there is bad weather, we will
be in the Lodge.
A
committee is still working very hard on our new by-laws and we should
have the results soon.
There
is a fishing trip planned for July 24, 2009. If you are interested,
please call Ray Gilmore at 776-6575 for more information. Other dates
for these trips are posted at the Lodge.
Members of
the Barnstead Historical Society recently painted the historic 1888 jail
that is located adjacent to the Town Hall in Center Barnstead. Those
pictured include: Roy Sargent, Jim Fougere, Paul Webber, Ken Pitman,
Roberta Pitman, and Betsy Webber. We can only imagine some of the
characters who inhabited this building in the late 1800s. Perhaps after
Saturday night dances there were some who were a little too spirited.
There is a sign in the jail that admonished vagrants to move to another
town. Might they have spent a cold winter night by the stove and
received a little soup before they were told to go on their way? Any
stories of the jail or perhaps, some of the dances that were held next
door, would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Ken Pitman at
269-5692.
