Barnstead Seniors: Eating Well
Many seniors live on limited income and skimp on their food budget to
help cover other expenses. Do you know of resources to help make
ends meet and keep your diet healthy?
Food Pantry – Barnstead’s Food Pantry is located in the Thrift Shop on
Route 28, next door to Bosco Bell. The thrift shop is open on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 9 and 3 pm; the Food Pantry on
Saturday morning between 10 and noon. If you need food delivered
to you, call the Barnstead Welfare Agent, Elaine Swinford at 235-1895.
Senior Centers’ lunches are served in Alton (875-7102) and Pittsfield
(435-8482). They serve a lunch Monday thru Thursday at noon in
Pittsfield and at 11:30 am in Alton (except Tuesday – lunch is at
12:30pm.) For those 60 and older there is a $2 donation and
for those younger, there is a $6 charge. Please call ahead and
make a reservation. The menu for the month is in their newsletters
posted at the library. Alton Senior Center’s Continental Breakfast
is on Tuesday at 9 am.
Meals on Wheels (MOW) are delivered to frail and homebound seniors,
while at the same time providing a safety and well-being check.
Barnstead Seniors receive meals delivered from the Pittsfield Senior
Center. Please call the manager Carol Schiferle at 435-8482 for
more information and to sign up. There is a requested $2 donation
per meal.
NH Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is free nutritious box of
food including such items as cereal, cheese, fruits, vegetables, pasta
and juice. To be eligible seniors must be 60 years of age and
older and meet federal income guidelines. The income guidelines
increased in April and are up to: $1276 monthly for a senior living
alone and $1726 for a family of two persons.
Call the CAP (Community Action Program) for Belknap-Merrimack Counties
at 225-2050 or 1-800-578-2050 to be pre-screened and they will set up an
appointment for you in either Pittsfield or Alton.
Community Resources are available with some digging. You may have
already discovered that hospitals serve good food at reasonable rates.
Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro is popular because their cafeteria
provides home cooking with good quality ingredients, including locally
grown beef. Another resource is the Alton Bay Christian Conference
Center. They serve a community dinner at 5 pm the 1st and 3rd
Thursday of the month. The Barnstead group, Nighthawk Hollow
Seniors, meet periodically for lunch and their notices are in the
newspaper.
