The Chichester Library has added to their collection two unique
books on natural and alternative materials home building. The first
book, Earthbag Building by Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer,
explains earthbag building. The first comprehensive guide to all the
tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with
earth, it is a reliable method for constructing homes,
out-buildings, garden walls, and much more. This enduring, tree-free
architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures
of great beauty at home in any region.
The second book is The Hand-Sculpted House – A Practical and
Philosophical Guide to Building a Cob Cottage by Ianto Evans, Michael Smith,
and Linda Smiley. A cob cottage is made of the oldest, most available
materials imaginable – earth, clay, sand, straw, and water. Cob houses are
not only compatible with their surroundings; they are their surroundings.
They are light, energy-efficient, and cozy with curved walls and built-in
whimsical touches.
