Chichester Heritage Commission New Hampshire’s One-Room Rural
Schools
The Chichester Heritage Commission has received a grant from the New
Hampshire Humanities Council to present “New Hampshire’s One Room
Schools: The Romance and Reality.” This program will take place at
the Grange Hall, 54 Main Street, on Thursday, April 18th at 7:00
p.m.
Steve Taylor, former NH’s Commissioner of Agriculture, will lead
this public discussion on the lasting legacies of the one-room
school house and how they shape education in present times. Hundreds
of one-room schools provided the backbone of primary education to
generations of children. Although these schools were often revered
in literature and lore, they were beset with problems, many of which
are very familiar in today’s educational environment.
Mr. Taylor is an independent scholar, farmer and journalist. He was
the founding executive director of the NH Humanities Council and is
a lifelong student of the State of New Hampshire’s rural culture.
This program is free and open to all. Ample parking is available.
The building is handicapped accessible.
The Chichester Heritage Commission and its program partner, the
Chichester Historical Society are pleased to offer this
presentation. Refreshments will be served after the program.
For more information about this program, please contact Lucille Noel
at 798-5709.
