Conservation Project Hike
The Town of Epsom and the Conservation
Commission is working in the Town Forest with the help of the SCA NH
Conservation Corp(SCA). If you would like to understand what the SCA
is, as well as see the trail they built last year and the work they
are doing this year, we hope you will join us on Saturday, July 9th.
The SCA provides a motivated and skilled crew (College Age) who
make a 10 month commitment to work in the schools teaching
conservation and then in the field doing vital conservation projects
and resource projects throughout the state. They work for
communities and agencies of NH. We are so excited to have them for a
3 week hitch.
The trail they built starts at the mill pond on
the Epsom town forest and travel along Blake’s Brook and an old cart
path. There are many points of interest including a water sluice
that leads to an old mill foundation on a beautiful mill pond that
is now managed by beaver. This area is naturally beautiful as well
as having the reminders of a 18th century farmstead which is now
forest. Stonewalls, the mill pond, wells and foundations are some of
the evidence of the once vital farm.
For some of the crew this
is their 2nd commitment. They have done projects all over the US and
come from other parts of the US to work for the SCA. Perhaps you are
a post high school student trying to figure out what you want to do.
The SCA trains you and pays you a stipend. When not on site working
a project, home base for the crew is Bear Brook State Park for NH.
Our crew is camping at a campsite on the town forest.
They have
an impressive camp site bordering the mill pond. They have set up a
kitchen camp, a pine needle dining area, a tarped den to store
equipment and get out of the weather and individual tents. They are
trained in camping and best practices for trail building. The new
trail is for passive use such as hiking and snowshoeing.
So come
meet this conservation minded crew. Perhaps you know someone who is
interested in applying to this program(SCA) or are interested in
learning about the beautiful trail system we have on the town
forest. Have you hiked Neville Peak? It is a must.
We hope you
will join us on July 9th. We will meet on Tarlton Road at the
parking area for the town forest at 10am. We will hike the new trail
and view some sites. Bring your lunch and picnic at the SCA
campsite. For directions and to RSVP please contact the Epsom
Conservation Commission at
[email protected] or 736-9744 eves.
Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield: This
week we passed the budget, 274-108, and the accompanying trailer
bill, 259-119. The debate was extensive, about equally divided
between those who wanted to make more cuts or more drastic actions,
and those who felt the budget cut their favorite program too deeply.
It is a reasonable compromise, meeting the goals set when we started
the budget process: spending within revenue estimates; no new taxes
or fees; no bonding to cover operating expenses; cities and towns
receive as much as they did last year; and the most vital services
covered. Everyone feels they could have done better, but we don’t
agree on which trade-offs to make!
The House and Senate also
overrode the Governor’s vetoes on three bills. HB109, forbidding
planning boards from requiring sprinklers in one or two family
homes, was only briefly discussed before we voted for it, 294-72.
Since sprinklers are still available in a negotiated agreement, this
will only stop planning boards from using sprinklers as a growth
control feature. HB133, my bill deleting the state minimum wage, got
more debate than this purely symbolic bill deserved! It passed,
261-110. HB329, parental notification before a minor’s abortion, was
also briefly debated. The most telling point was made by the
committee chair who pointed out that despite his veto message, the
Governor had never sent his concerns to the House while they worked
on this bill. The vote was 266-102.
After some debate, we passed
SB52, which fixes last year’s SB500, on parole. Sexually violent
criminals will only get supervised parole, and the parole board has
more discretion to authorize release or return any parole violator
to prison for longer periods. Anyone who wants more information
than I can fit into a letter should email me for my newsletter.

Local
Businessman Inducted To
Pembroke Academy Hall Of Fame
Since 2005 Pembroke Academy has honored alumni who have made a
difference in their local communities and the business world.
This year local business owner and a graduate of class of 1979, Jeff
Eames was honored at Pembroke Academy’s senior convocation.
Jeff received his award on June 17 after addressing the
graduating class, faculty, and parents. He urged all in
attendance to always be reaching for the next level; to push
themselves to get a higher education and always to be open to learn
new skills. “Continuing education has always played an
important part in my life, in order for me to reach the next level
and be a better business owner I knew that I needed to attend
school,” Jeff told the students.
After completing his Thompson
School studies in 1981, Jeff purchased his first cable skidder and
became a logging contractor. Over thirty years later, Jeff and
the Fort Mountain Company crews are supplying domestic and foreign
markets with high quality forest products including fuel chips to
local power plants and industry. What started as a one
man operation has grown into one of the most innovative forestry
companies in New England that employs 18 full time and 2 part time
people.
