Gilmanton Historical Society Seeks Photographs
As the Gilmanton Historical Society begins its 50th year, it
continues to expand its wonderful collection of items related to the
history of Gilmanton. Founded in 1967, the Society preserves
and exhibits artifacts, letters, printed materials, and photographs
that help document and explain the history of the Town. The
Society has an excellent small museum, located in the lower level of
the Old Town Hall in the Iron Works, that houses and displays its
collections. The Society also presents a series of programs
each year on historical subjects relating to Gilmanton and New
Hampshire. It also takes the Gilmanton 4th grade students on a
history tour of Town each spring.
The Society is seeking additional photographs that might be used in
two of its programs this summer. One program, August 23rd ,
will focus on the home front in Gilmanton during World War II.
Although our collection does include some wonderful pictures from
that time period, we are hoping to find more, in particular photos
of service members in uniform, victory gardens, metal drives or
anything else that might illustrate what folks in Gilmanton were
doing during the war years.
A second program and a tour, August 13th, will center on Lower
Gilmanton, the first-settled area of the Town. Anyone with
early photographs of Lower Gilmanton that they might be willing to
share is asked to contact the Society. We have the ability to
scan and return photographs the same day to those who make them
available. Although we are concentrating on these two
subjects, any early Gilmanton photos or items would be most welcome.
If you can help out, please contact Paula Gilman (393-5761,
[email protected]) or John
Dickey (267-6098, [email protected]). The
Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so any
donations are tax deductible.
The Historical Society is sometimes confused with another important
Gilmanton organization, the Historic District Commission (HDC).
The two bodies have quite different roles. Whereas the Historical
Society deals with preserving history, the HDC’s role focuses on
reviewing exterior construction details in the Town’s two historic
districts.

Twenty-five high school diplomas will be awarded on June 3rd.
Many of the graduates are unemployed and need their high school
diploma to get a job, earn a pay increase or job promotion.
Some graduates returned to Laconia Academy to increase their own
sense of self-esteem and personal self-worth. Other graduates
enrolled in the program will enter new career fields, find a better
job, or will have the opportunity to be hired now that they have
their high school diploma.

Community members were invited to donate gently-used clothing and
household items at the Gilmanton School this past Sunday for its
first annual Savers Donation Drive. The drive’s goal was to
raise funds to support the continued operation of Gilmanton’s Year
Round Library. The Gilmanton community surely came through because
with the joint volunteering efforts of Gilmanton School PTA and
BASE, we raised $528.80. Gilmanton School PTA and BASE would also
like to thank Keith Corbett of Atlas Precision Metal Fabricators
Inc. for the donation of his box truck, which we filled with the
donations and his time for helping Savers unload it.
All goods collected through the Donation Drive fundraiser program
are sold to Savers. Savers pays by the pound for every qualifying
donation received and the $528.80 will go right to GYRL. In turn,
these items help keep Savers floors freshly stocked.
The Gilmanton School PTA is responsible for raising money so that we
may supplement our students’ curriculum and enrich their educational
experiences. We encourage any Gilmanton resident to join PTA. You
can visit our website at
http://gilmanton.sau79.org/home/pta. BASE is a licensed
after school care provider whose mission is to provide families that
attend Gilmanton Elementary School with before and after school care
that meets the social, emotional, and physical needs of every child
who attends.
