The Great Pumpkin Challenge 2009
At the beginning of planting season, members of the church
family at the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield were invited to
participate in the “Great Pumpkin Challenge.” Several folks signed up
and for the coming months those participating were constantly comparing
notes and inquiring about progress. The big reckoning day came on
October 4th when they all gathered at the church parking lot, early
afternoon, and car pooled hither and yon to Chichester, Epsom,
Pittsfield, Barnstead and Gilmanton, for the measuring of the “Great
Pumpkins.” Each one had a story to tell as they were measured, regarding
their trials, tribulations and the “LOUSY” growing weather!
Rain,
rain and more rain!
When the task was completed, everyone returned to the church for the
announcement of the size winners and the tally of notes for other
categories. Awards were given as follows: Largest: 1st, Don and Kathy
Bergeron; 2nd, Dave and Linda Stasiak; 3rd, Fred Carlson. Smallest: 1st,
Riley and Kevin Kennedy; 2nd, Ron and Sue Leclerc and Dolly Kelley; 3rd,
Mike and Nella Hobson; Honorable Mention, Reny and Junie Boyd.
Prettiest, Leon and Corine Miller. Most Intelligent, Fred Carlson. Looks
Most Like Its Owner, Riley and Kevin Kennedy. Weirdest Shape, Dave and
Linda Stasiak. Best Pumpkin Growing Story, 1st, Mike Hobson; 2nd, Art
and Elsie Morse; 3rd, Corine Miller.
Actually Margie Lank had the Largest Pumpkin, but because she
organized the event, she disqualified herself.
