Area Firefighters Participate In 9/11 Memorial Climb
Firefighters, friends, family and supporters joined together in a
110 story climb to commemorate the loss of 343 New York Firefighters
who died in an attempt to rescue those trapped in the World Trade
Towers on September 11, 2001 at the Brady-Sullivan Tower in
Manchester on Sunday, September 9. Firefighters represented 47
departments from three states and ascended the floors in 39 teams.
Firefighters from Allenstown, Epsom, and Barnstead joined 296
climbers who scaled the twenty stories of the Brady-Sullivan Tower
five times, descended to the 10th floor and climbed the
remaining 10 stories to reach the 110 floors, the height of the
World Trade Towers.
Each climber carried an identity card of a firefighter who lost
their life that day. The name of that firefighter was announced and
a bell tolled in their honor. The climb began precisely at 9:03
a.m., the time that United Airline Flight 175 hit the South Tower.
Funds raised by the Memorial Stair Climb, an estimated $15,000, is
contributed to the National Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial, a fund
that assists the family of a firefighter lost in the line of duty.
Organizers of the Second Annual Memorial Stair climb were Nashua
Firefighter Bill Campbell and Manchester Firefighter Greg Bolduc.
