Amidst the destruction of last week's
tornado Old Glory stands straight and proudly flying.
Volunteers and residents point out damage to a newsteam
on the site at the Epsom/Northwood line the day after
the storm. The bright day and quiet skies belie the fury
of the storm the day before which touched down from
Atkinson to Effingham.

Nottingham Resident Receives
Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship
Ethan Alexander Howe (in cap and
gown), winner of the Nathan C. Lake Memorial
Scholarship, and his parents, Judith and Fred Howe (far

Butterfield, Anne Lake and Cindy Lake at the Coe-Brown
graduation ceremony.

Ethan Alexander Howe of Nottingham, a member of
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy's Class of 2008, was the first recipient
of The Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship. The amount awarded was
$10,000. Mr. Howe will begin studying cellular and molecular biology
at San Diego State University this fall.
The Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship was
established by Mr. Lake's family following his death in July 2007.
Mr. Lake was a resident of Strafford and, with his wife, Anne, ran
Berrybogg Farm for more than 30 years.
"We chose to start a scholarship in Nathan's name
because education, both formal and informal, was an integral part of
who Nathan was," says Anne Lake. "His parents struggled financially
to send him to Lafayette College as so many parents do today but
they did what they had to do and Nathan lived his life always
grateful for the opportunity. We have lived in this community for
more than 35 years and over the years we have had the pleasure of
employing many Coe-Brown students in our blueberry fields. We were
always impressed with how many of the students were college bound
and spoke highly of Coe-Brown. Our family hopes this scholarship
will help students realize their dream of college and foster a
lifelong love of education, which is how Nathan lived his life."
The family and friends of Nathan Lake contributed
more than $69,000 to establish the Nathan C. Lake Memorial
Scholarship Fund. For information about establishing a memorial
scholarship at Coe-Brown, contact the Development Office at
603-942-5531, ext. 186, or e-mail
[email protected].

Letter
I consider myself fairly stoic after all the
political activity I have been involved in over the past 5 years,
but I have to admit to a moment of sheer elation hearing about
Obama's trip overseas. After years of cringing every time George
Bush opened his mouth (or gave an unexpected shoulder rub to a world
leader!) overseas, to watch video and read reports about a
thoughtful, competent, intelligent candidate, who is obviously not
confused by the details, meeting global leaders is pure joy.
I understand that I will be slammed by those who
don't care what the rest of the world thinks about our leaders, who
see our role not as the leader we used to be but as the bully, using
force as a first resort. But we really are all in this together, and
the decisions of the world's superpower and "biggest polluter" do
have a great impact on people everywhere. What they think about us
does make a difference. The policies of the Bush administration have
made us much less secure, economically, environmentally and in our
ability to be secure within our borders and secure in our rights,
and the next president will have an uphill job putting the mess
right. I am delighted to see that at least one of the candidates is
capable of more than sound bites and threats, and has a vision for
our global future.
As far as this being an "elitist" view, being
intelligent is only elitist if you think most Americans are stupid.
I don't. Neither does Barack Obama. It is really, really time for
the grown-ups to have a try at running this country. We don't need
four more years of McBush.
