When
Did Girl Scouts Start In Northwood?
Girl Scouts will be
celebrating their 100th birthday this March! What does that mean for
Northwood Girl Scouts? An exciting year ahead of learning and
remembering scouts from the past and gearing up for our own fun new
journey in scouting.
Girl Scouts was started on March 12, 1912
by Juliette “Daisy” Low in Savannah, Georgia. She assembled 18 girls
and gave them the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and
spiritually. Within a few years, her dream for a girl-centered
organization was realized. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a
membership of over 3.2 million girls and adults. In fact, more than
50 million women in the U.S. today are Girl Scout alumnae.
What
do we need from Northwood residents? We need your help in finding
out when Girl Scouts started in Northwood. Both the Historical
Society and our council, Girl Scouts of the Green and White
Mountains, have no record of Northwood troops ever forming. We want
to change that. We want to know who our town’s alumnae are, and
their story. With scouting stories and photographs from both the
past and present we will create a Girl Scout scrapbook to
commemorate our 100th birthday and donate it to our town’s
historical society. Thus making our mark today for the future
Northwood scouts of tomorrow.
Please share your story with us
and be a part of this momentous celebration. We will be gathering
your scouting memories through September and sharing them at our
Rededication and Investiture Ceremony in October, where the 100+
Northwood Girl Scouts will recite the GS promise and law and take
the time to remember the past 100 years and look forward to 100
more!

Warren Alfred Mihachik
Warren Alfred Mihachik, 71, of Northwood and the Epsom Manor died
August 10, 2011 at the Concord Hospital after a lifelong struggle
with the aftermath of polio.
He was born June 27, 1940 in
Concord, the son of the late Dr. Alfred and Ruth (Caverly) Mihachik
of Northwood. He graduated from Coe Brown Northwood Academy in
1959 and studied at the Bulova School of Watchmaking in New York
City. While he was at Bulova, he was a member of a National
Champion Wheelchair basketball team and participated in the National
Wheelchair Olympics. After working at Abilities, a sheltered
workshop in Queens, he returned to New Hampshire to start his own
watch repair shop. He also worked as a draftsman for Beede
Electronics in Penacook.
He was passionate about sports.
He taught ping pong and wheelchair basketball, raced snowmobiles and
dragsters. His special passion though was fishing, especially
for trout and bass. He was a Bass Master and had caught
several trophy fish. He also developed a special interest in
the environment and opened a school to teach bass fishing and
environmental protection.
Warren used his various
interests to promote better understanding of the needs and abilities
of the handicapped community by inviting the able-bodied to use a
wheelchair to compete with him in these sports. He researched many
New Hampshire landmarks and was particularly interested in Gilford’s
Kimball Castle.
Warren is survived by his sister,
Joan Nelson and her husband John of Rochester; his brother, David A.
Mihachik and his wife Kathy of Chichester; nephews, Terrill Holt of
Somersworth, Alfred Holt and his wife Mindy Sue of Rochester, David
Mihachik, Jr of Allenstown, James Mihachik of Epsom, Andrew Mihachik
of Albany, NY; grandnieces, Elizabeth Holt of Rochester, Cassondra
Travis of Rochester, Kelsey Mihachik of Allenstown and grandnephew,
David Travis of Cummings, GA.
A celebration of Warren’s
life was held at the Advent Christian Church in Northwood Narrow on
Monday, August 15th.
