Pittsfield
Middle School Girls Soccer Team
In the
culmination of another successful year, the Pittsfield Middle School Girls
Soccer Team was pleased to have placed 1st in the Suncook Valley Tournament
hosted in Barnstead. The Lady Panthers qualified to compete in the
championship after a 3-1 win over Allenstown. Supported by a solid offense
and defense, Alexis Samaluk tallied 2 goals in the first half assisted by
Sage Anthony and Janice Negron, and netted a 3rd shot later off a cross from
Gabby Batchelder.
The final game with Barnstead challenged the team offensively with the
opposing goalie fending off 20 Pittsfield shots. With minutes remaining, a
Pittsfield shot rebounded off the vertical bar and Ebonie Burritt, in her
first goal of the season, hammered it home for the team. A great finish to a
great season.
We wish all the 8th graders well as they move on to compete at the high
school levels and look forward to an exciting 2009 middle school season with
a solid roster of returning players. This year’s 2008 Middle School team
members included: Rebekah Adams, Sage Anthony, Emily Buchanan, Brittany
Cassel, Liz Cyr, Cassidy Kearns, Janice Negron, Christianna Thompson,

Blood Drive Coordinator
A big thank you to the Pittsfield Middle School Girls Soccer Program. Under
the leadership of Coach Peter Tuttle, twenty girls volunteered and helped
put out posters and staff the October 30th American Red Cross Blood Drive.
It was great to see young people involved in such an important collection
process. I’m sure they all learned a lot and will hopefully become future
donors.
I’d also like to thank the Women of Rotary for making sandwiches, PEPTO
parents for baking and Twin M Supermarket for their donation.
Most important of all, thank you to all the blood donors who took time from
their busy day to help someone else.
Our next Blood Drive will be held January 13, 2009. See you there!
New Law
Authorizes Veterans’ Salutes During National Anthem
Submitted By:
Merrill Vaughn
Washington (Oct. 30, 2008) - Veterans and active-duty military not in
uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of
the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this
month.
“The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who
have served in our nation’s armed forces,” said Secretary of Veterans
Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. “This provision allows the application of that
honor in all events involving our nation’s flag.”
The new provision
improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized
veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising,
lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the
national anthem. Last year’s provision also applied to members of the armed
forces while not in uniform.
Traditionally, members of the nation’s veterans service organizations have
rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving
the national flag while wearing their organization’s official head-gear.
The most recent change, authorizing hand-salutes during the national anthem
by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel, was sponsored by Sen. Jim
Inhofe of Oklahoma, an Army veteran. It was included in the Defense
Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14.
The earlier provision authorizing hand-salutes for veterans and
out-of-uniform military personnel during the raising, lowering or passing
of the flag, was contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of
2008, which took effect Jan. 28, 2008.
November: A
Hot, Colorful Month For The Players
November was
ushered in on the first in shades of ruby and silver as The Pittsfield
Players celebrated their fortieth anniversary. This gala, held at the Elks
Hall in Epsom, provided a scrumptious buffet dinner catered by Concord’s
Windmill Restaurant, melodically hot tunes offered by DJ Mike Reale, and the
exciting presentation of the 2007 Dame Awards recognizing theatrical
excellence among over 70 Pittsfield Player nominees. The night began with a
traditional cocktail hour culminating with opening remarks by Board of
Director President, Jeff Gregoire and a spectacular retrospective
audio/visual power point presentation prepared by Mike Hobson where snips
and snaps of past (and current) performers, productions, and stage techies
were showcased. The Roland Charron Memorial Award was bestowed upon 20 year
veteran member Maye Hart for her service and commitment to the Players in
both leadership and performance.
Shades of ruby and silver will only be pale compared to the colors of Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat slated to premiere on the Scenic Stage
on Friday, November 14 at 8 p.m. Scored by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this
incredible production will provide smashing song and dance performances as
the biblically inspired story of Joseph, his brothers, and their father
paint themes of loyalty and compassion that the entire family will remember
for seasons to come. In addition to its premiere on the 14th, other
performances are slated for November 15, 21, and 22 at 8 p.m. with a matinee
on the 16th at 2 p.m. For tickets and information, visit The Pittsfield
Players website at
www.pittsfieldplayers.com and click the TicketLeap link found on the
right of the article. Internet-phobic? You may also call the box office at
435-8852 to reserve; the reservation will be confirmed by a member calling
you back. Color yourself “disappointed” if you allow this amazing production
to pass you by.
