Barnstead NH News

July 9, 2008

Angelina Milano of Center Barnstead has been named to the Becker College, Worcester, Mass., Dean's List for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Letter

I would like to thank all the people who served on the Locke Lake By-law Committee. These people have given up every Wednesday morning since October and worked very hard. They are Barbara Krilivsky, Rita Wolfe, Dot Chiccola, Judy Cropper, Joanne MacNeil, Mike Ranaldi and Deana Cowan.

A miscommunication between the Board of Directors and the By-law Committee exists. The By-law amendments from the lawyer had only been seen by Board President Mike Ranaldi, the administrator and myself as chairman of the By-law Committee. No meeting of the committee had been held to accept any changes or recommendations. In earlier discussion the committee decided the entire revisions of the By-laws should be reviewed by all Colony members. It should have gone in its entirety with the mailing for input from all members before a final vote. The Board of Directors has recommended the amendments from the lawyer, not the By-law Committee as they have never seen them and therefore cannot recommend them.

Thank you,

Peggy Gingras

Barnstead Old Home Day Canoe & Kayak Race

The Barnstead Old Home Day Committee is working in cooperation with Kerry Guptil from Suncook River Canoe & Kayak to make this year's Canoe & Kayak Race bigger and better than ever! The race will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 23, 2008, which is Barnstead Old Home Day.

The course is 2.25 miles and runs from the launch area on the Big River (behind the Police Station) downstream to meet the Suncook River, and then on to the finish line just up-stream from the Parade Dam.

Registration fee is $5.00 per boat and registrations will be taken at the launch site from 12:00 noon-1:45 p.m. on the day of the race. Each registrant will receive a free T-shirt. Racing categories include tandem canoe, solo canoe, tandem kayak and solo kayak.

This year, winner awards will be made possible by the race sponsors:

  • Suncook River Canoe & Kayak Company, Barnstead

  • The Ruffined Pooch, Barnstead

  • Northeast Garden Center, Chichester

  • Subway, Epsom

  • Autotool, LLC, Barnstead

Awards will be given to the first, second and third place finishers as solo male and female, tandem male pairs and female pairs, coed pairs and senior pairs in each category.

Come join us for a great race and compete for some great prizes!

Letter

We wish to impress upon the members of Locke Lake Colony the importance of the annual meeting and most importantly the proxies. Please fill out the proxy and give it to someone who is going to attend the meeting. This way your vote is cast as you direct that person to vote for you. The reason for this is if you leave or mail the proxy to the office, the Board of Directors can use your vote any way they wish. The proxy must be verified by the office on or before July 21, 2008 to be accepted.

The so called budget presented to members of Locke Lake Colony by the Board of Directors in its mailing is not acceptable. There is no vote on the proxy for the budget. It has always been a line item budget. No budget should be accepted without line items. This is our money and we alone decide how it should be spent not the Board. Many expenditures have been spent without members' knowledge. A line item budget is necessary for the operation of the Colony. All members have a say on all expenditures. Therefore, we recommend this budget not be approved for the good of the Colony.

Does the Board think we will not care enough to stay and vote for the lines we want? Members have a right to request, in writing, a line item budget and profit and loss statement from the administrator to be returned in 5 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cropper

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Gingras

and many neighbor/members of Locke Lake Colony

Family Diversity Project In Barnstead

Submitted by Katie Whiteman

`Love Makes a Family' Is The Theme To This Traveling Exhibit Of All Kinds of Families

The exhibit contains 20 portraits and a write up of each family. The exhibit includes; adoptive families, foster families, divorced families and step-families, single-parent families, multiracial families, families dealing with illness, families living with physical challenges, families living with mental illness, families living with developmental disabilities, lesbian-and gay-parented families, interfaith families, multigenerational families, and immigrant families. The exhibit gets right to the heart of the matter, of what children think and feel about their families and loving partners. The literature is also written for elementary school aged children so they can learn about these families.

This exhibit contributes to the process of dismantling the destructive power of prejudice and intolerance, thus making the world a safer place for all people. It is about humanity and love. This exhibit will be at the UCC, Congregational Church of North Barnstead located on 504 North Barnstead Road, Center Barnstead, NH 03225.

There will be an open house to view the exhibit on July 11th, 18th, and 25th from 7-9 p.m. If you cannot make it at these times, please call Katie Whiteman at 776-5306 to schedule an appointment. Bring your school, your family, and your friends. All are welcome.

Deadline For MVSB Photo Contest Is approaching

Submit your photos by August 1, 2008

Don't miss your opportunity to participate in Meredith Village Savings Bank's 2008 Photography Contest! All entries are due by the close of business on Friday, August 1, 2008.

This year, MVSB is taking its annual photo contest to the internet. In addition to submitting entries for MVSB's 2009 Community Calendar, local photographers can also vie for the chance to have their photos displayed on the bank's website at www.mvsb.com.

As in past years, amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit photographs that capture the character and beauty of Belknap, Carroll and Grafton counties as well as conveying some aspect of community/family life, such as community events, landmarks or seasonal pastimes. Photos featuring local landscape scenes are highly encouraged - especially for the website.

Winners of the calendar contest will have their photographs featured in the 2009 MVSB Community Calendar, to be distributed free-of-charge to the community, and photographers will be awarded a $50 U.S. EE Savings Bond for each photo that is included in the calendar. Winners of the website contest will have their photos featured as the homepage banner photo that appears on the homepage of the bank's website.

Photographers may enter both the calendar and website contests but separate entries must be submitted for each contest. In addition, the required format for website entries is very different from the format for calendar submissions so please read the submission requirements for each type of entry very carefully.

Please include a cover sheet with each entry indicating the following:

  • Which contest the photo is being entered for calendar or website

  • Your name, address, and phone number

  • A short description of the photograph.

All entries are due by the close of business on Friday, August 1, 2008.

Calendar entries

Entries may be submitted at any MVSB office or via mail to "Meredith Village Savings Bank, attn: Marketing, P.O. Box 177, Meredith, NH 03253." A maximum of five (5) entries may be submitted per photographer.

Entries may be in color or black and white. Participants should understand that photography will appear as black and white halftones on the calendar and one aspect of the selection process will reflect how well, in the judges' opinion, photographs will appear in that format.

Digital photography is preferred and must be a minimum of 300 dpi at 8" x 10" and saved in tiff, eps or jpg format. They must be submitted as prints, with disk. Slides or prints (35mm) are also acceptable formats. Prints must have a glossy (not matte) finish. Negatives must be available for all prints that are submitted.

Website entries

Only color photographs will be considered for inclusion on the website. Entries must be submitted as digital images on disk at a minimum resolution of 72 dpi (higher is preferred) at 968 pixels wide by 212 pixels high. Prints must also be submitted for judging and cataloguing purposes.

Full contest details are available at www.mvsb.com/photocontest or at any Meredith Village Savings Bank office. Offices are located on Route 25 in Meredith, at Olde Province Common on Route 104 in Meredith, across from Shaw's in Gilford, on Route 25 in Moultonborough Corner, on Route 25 in Center Harbor, on Route 3 in Ashland, inside the Hannaford Brothers supermarket at Hatch Plaza in Plymouth, on Main Street in Plymouth, in Laconia, at the Alton Hannaford's Supermarket near the traffic circle at Route 28 and Route 11, and at the Wolfeboro temporary office at 18 Union Street across from the town hall.
