The
University of Hartford, College of Arts and Sciences, recognizing
outstanding scholastic achievement, has placed Jessica G. Russell, of
Barnstead, NH, on the Dean’s List for the Spring 2011 semester.
She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology
The Dean’s
List is based on the student’s scholastic average during the semester.
To be included on the Dean’s List, a student must have an average of
3.25 or better out of a possible 4.0 and have no grade below C.
Jessica has also earned a spot on the President’s Honors List. The
President’s Honors List is made up of an extremely select group of
students who earned a grade point average of 3.75 or higher in the
semester.

Barnstead
Elementary School will be holding soccer tryouts for 6th, 7th and 8th
graders on August 23rd, 24th and 25th. The Boys will practice from 3:00
to 4:30, and the Girls will practice from 4:30 to 6:00. If there

Barnstead Blueberry Baking Contest
How
would you like to bake a wonderful blueberry dessert for the Barnstead
Old Home Day Blueberry Baking Contest? This year the competition is sure
to be stiff! A panel of judges will be on hand to sample some of the
area’s most delicious blueberry recipes.
We hope that you and all of
your friends will enter the contest, pick some blueberries, get out the
old family recipes, or simply try a brand new recipe you have never
tried before! It’s more than just the traditional blueberry pie
(although feel free to make a pie as well), but it could be so much
more. The sky is the limit! Be creative!
Pick up a registration
form at the Town Hall or look for the registration form on the town
website at
www.barnstead.org/aboutbarnstead/oldhomeday. Pre-registration is
encouraged.
We ask that all dishes be submitted and brought to the
Parade tent by 1:30 pm on Saturday August 27th.Judging begins at 2:30
pm.

dish, due to possible allergies*

“Reptiles
On The Move!” Ends Summer Reading Program
We are wrapping up our
Summer Reading Program at the Oscar Foss Memorial Library with a
fantastic show called “Reptiles On The Move!” on Wednesday, August 17,
2011 at 10 am. The show will be held at “The Woods at Beauty
Hill”, 557 Beauty Hill Road, Center Barnstead.
Come join us for some
fun and exciting exploration into the slinky slimy world of small and
large reptiles! “Reptiles on the Move” offers interactive,
hands-on reptile programs that are fun and informative. They have
been in operation since 1997 and offer exciting, comprehensive animal
programs that will educate, increase awareness and promote great
appreciation of these fascinating creatures. They are dedicated to
the preservation, conservation and care of reptiles and amphibians as an
important part of the world’s ecosystem. You never know what kind
of fun and surprises there will be!
Summer Reading Certificates will
also be presented at this time. This event is sponsored in part by
a grant from the NH State Library and donations from the Byrne
Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and the NH Library

Melanie J.
Russell
Melanie J. Russell, of Barnstead, graduated Cum Laude, from
the University of Hartford on May 15, 2011. She received a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Minors in Math
and Technical Writing.
During her undergraduate years, Melanie
was a member of ASME and a past president of the student chapter.
She was a member of the Red Caps, welcoming new students and giving
tours to prospective students and also worked for the Athletic Dept.,
selling tickets to home sporting events. She enjoyed playing
Intramural volleyball and competing in their tournaments.
Melanie has
now moved to Colorado, with her fiancé Josh O’Neil, of Alton, and is
currently working at an internship at Micro Motion. She will be
attending the University of Colorado in Boulder in the fall to pursue a
Masters Degree in Sustainability and Green Engineering. She hopes
to concentrate on Wind Energy.
Melanie is a 2007 graduate of Prospect
Mountain High School and is the daughter of Jim and Jean Russell.

Sneakers And Let’s Go!
At this year’s Barnstead Old Home Day, on
August 27th, children of all ages will be able to participate in a
number of fun-filled activities. Try your hand at a game of
horseshoes or find hand-holds on the rock climbing wall. Weave
your way through the Fiber Arts exhibit or follow the Cake Walk to a
sweet treat. Did you ever wonder how some of the roads in
Barnstead got their names or when the Parade Bandstand was built?
Visit the Historical Society and take a stroll down memory lane.
Make sure those sneaker treads are in good shape and we sure hope our
paths meet along the way.
Else Cilley
Chapter, NSDAR News
Members of the Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR met at
the former home of deceased member, Elvia Hetu, in Center Barnstead, NH
this July. The women enjoyed lunch including brownies with ice
cream. Following the business meeting, the members traveled to the
Riverview Cemetery for a dedication ceremony led by Chaplain Rebecca
Rush. Elvia’s granddaughter, Amy Gervino of Hampstead, sang during
the ceremony. Mrs. Hetu’s daughters, Jan Gilman of Fremont and
Nancy Gervino of Hampstead, who are members of the Else Cilley Chapter,
placed the bronze marker at the gravesite.
The next meeting of the
Else Cilley Chapter will be on Wednesday, August 17th at the Nottingham
Square Schoolhouse in Nottingham, NH beginning with light refreshments
served at 1:30. The program will be on Costa Rica with the public
welcome to attend. Women interested in joining the DAR may contact

Summer Concert Series
Barnstead Summer Concerts is ready to rock the town on Saturday, August
13th, from 6 – 8 pm, at the parade grounds. Nimbus 9, formed
more than ten years ago as an original rock quartet. They have
grown and evolved into the high energy, multi-faceted entertainers we
see today. With a decade of experience under their belt, this band
brings a youthful flavor of Top 40 hits to the music scene.
Drawing
on a wide range of inspirations, this tightly knit quintet plays hard
rock, to funk to R&B, and they do it with ease. Nimbus 9 is
quickly finding themselves to be one of the most sought-after cover acts
in the Northeast. This band has a strong following right here in
Barnstead, as it includes Greg Neveu, Barnstead Elementary’s awesome
