Barnstead Elementary Joins Fisher Cats Reading
Challenge
School joins
program to reward students for extra-curricular reading.
Students at
Barnstead Elementary School meet Fungo the Fisher Cat as he introduced
the school to the Fisher Cats Reading Challenge.
Students at
Barnstead Elementary were visited by a special guest with a special
challenge recently. Fungo, the mascot for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats,
visited the school to launch its participation in the 2013-14 Fisher
Cats Reading Challenge, presented by Velcro USA Inc.
Fungo’s
challenge to the students was a simple one: if you read five books
outside your normal curriculum, you’ll earn two tickets to a Fisher Cats
Reading Challenge Game at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium next spring,
courtesy of Velcro USA, Inc.
“Without a
doubt, these are some of Fungo’s favorite days of the year, right next
to Opening Day,” said Rick Brenner, Fisher Cats President. “Being able
to motivate and reward these children with Velcro USA Inc. is a great
thing. We hope the students have fun and look forward to the excitement
of our special Reading Challenge games next season.”
The Fisher
Cats’ assembly, one of about 40 that Fungo and the Fisher Cats will make
this school year, highlighted the importance of developing strong
reading skills to these students – both for their immediate goals and
their long-term ambitions. Additionally, the assembly featured
interactive games and healthy living tips like exercising and eating
right.
“With our
commitment to education and life-long learning, Velcro USA applauds the
Fisher Cats’ Reading Challenge and its efforts to fortify reading skills
among children,” said Scott Filion, President, Velcro USA Inc. “We’re
proud to support this program and look forward to strengthening our
connection to the community by bringing families together at upcoming
Fisher Cats games.”
By the end
of the academic year, the Fisher Cats will distribute 60,000 Reading
Challenge bookmarks to students across New Hampshire and northern
Massachusetts, reaching approximately 150 schools. This will raise the
program’s reach to more than 260,000 students since 2007.
In addition
to the individual challenge, students will represent their school in a
special team competition for the fourth straight year. Through a
donation from the Fisher Cats Foundation, the schools with the highest
percentage of students who complete the Reading Challenge will be
eligible to win one of three prizes totaling $5,000 for their schools.
The program
is available free-of-charge to all schools in New Hampshire and northern
Massachusetts. To book a presentation by Fungo and the Fisher Cats, or
to receive the program information, contact the Fisher Cats Community
Relations team at (603) 641-2005.
The Fisher
Cats Reading Challenge, presented by Velcro USA Inc., is a part of the
Fisher Cats year-round effort to give back to local communities. Since
2007, the Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation have generated more
than $3 million in monetary and in-kind donations to more than 3,800
non-profit organizations. In that time, the Fisher Cats Foundation has
awarded $200,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors.
Opening Day
at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium is April 10, 2014, against the
Binghamton Mets (New York Mets). Fisher Cats Full and Half-Season
Tickets are on sale now. Season Ticket Holders enjoy a host of benefits,
including monthly all-you-can-eat barbecues, a free kid’s birthday
party, flexible exchange policy, invitation to exclusive events, and
much more. Fans who purchase by February 1 will also receive double
Fisher Cash – up to $100 per full-season seat – to use at concessions
stands or in the Souvenir Store. For tickets, visit
www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
Taize’
Worship Service - Ash Wednesday
The
Congregational Church of North Barnstead (CCNB) cordially invites you to
attend a Taize’ Worship Service, Ash Wednesday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m.
Taize’ is
an informal, ecumenical worship service with a focus on reconciliation,
peace and social justice. Comprised of Scripture readings, prayer,
sacred silence and songs, its underlying aim is for those gathered to
enter together into the mystery of God’s presence. The songs are short,
containing words from the Psalms or other Scripture. Sung communally and
repetitively, they become a unifying prayer and engender inner
stillness.
Taize’
worship began 73 years ago in a small village (Taize’) in the Burgundy
region of France. It has spread world-wide by people seeking to promote
reconciliation and peace in the places they live and work. Taize’
attracts over 100,000 people, many between the ages of 17 and 40, each
year.
This
peaceful service is in candlelight and lasts 45 minutes. CCNB is at 504
North Barnstead Road. Come join us as we enter into the Lenten season.
All are welcome!
Letter
People of
Barnstead N.H.
I have had
many people from Barnstead call me and ask me on the street to re-run
for Selectmen. They say they need someone to work for them, and not the
Board of Selectmen. My policy has and always will be, that if elected,
I work for the Governing Body of the town, which is the people of
Barnstead N.H. The way I see it is we are your servants to try and make
this town the way you want it to be. I have served as your Selectmen for
three years, I attended the New Hampshire Select Person’s Institute, put
on by Antioch, New England Institute.
I know we
have problems in town and the board is micro-managing again. First of
all Officer McDowell should be made Chief and not acting Chief. He has
been a dedicated police officer for over 6 years, and he should be
promoted from within.
As far as
Fire Chief I would like the department to pick one from within. If not,
we had a list of Fire Chiefs that went through our program before; we
could ask them if they are interested.
But my
Question is, who would want to work for a Board of Selectmen who does
not allow them to do what they were hired to do? If you elect me as your
Selectman I will do my best to see that the Police Department & Fire
Departments are brought back to the levels you want, and that department
heads can spend up to $2000.00 without seeing the Board. We need to quit
buying new equipment unless we really need it, and I will try to keep
taxes low.
Hope I have
Your Support
