Tied winning  team captains, Cheryl Wood and Claire Moody.

The two teams that were tied with least number of swings. Sitting on table are Captains Cheryl Wood and Claire Moody. and on bench are Peter Kelly, Tom Boyd, Todd Landano, Joanne Boyd and Co-coordinator Ray Gilmore. Other players were, Ann Shea, Bill Moody, John McPhee, Diane Norton, Vicki Bednarski, John Wood and Jon Martin.  Arlene Gilmore was equipment manager.

Fifteen members of the Locke Lake Social Club met on the Colony golf course on September 6th,  to try their hand at “Monkey Golf.”  Four teams had a chance to work at making the lowest number of swings to get the ball in the hole.  Many laughs were heard, especially when the dandelion blossoms were mistaken for the yellow golf ball.  There was no need to aerate the greens because now there are many ‘divots’ in the course.  WHIFFS galore along the many more laughs.  The Monkey Golfer trophy was  given to the winning teams at the Pot Luck Supper, along with prizes for each member.

Celebrate Your Freedom to Read During Banned Books Week!

In support of the right to choose books freely for ourselves, the ALA and Oscar Foss Memorial Library are sponsoring Banned Books Week, September 21-27th, an annual celebration of our right to access books without censorship. This year’s observance commemorates the most basic freedom in a democratic society, the freedom to read freely, and encourages us not to take this freedom for granted.

Since its inception in 1982, Banned Books Week has reminded us that while not every book is intended for every reader, each of us has the right to decide for ourselves what to read, listen to or view. Oscar Foss Memorial Library and thousands of libraries and bookstores across the country will celebrate the freedom to read by participating in special events, exhibits and read-outs that showcase books that have been banned or threatened. Stop by the Oscar Foss Memorial Library and “check out” our display of Banned Books.

The ALA, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Association of American Publishers, the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, and the National Association of College Stores sponsor Banned Books Week. The Library of Congress Center for the Book endorses the observance. American libraries are the cornerstones of our democracy. Libraries provide free access to a world of information, bringing opportunity to everyone, everywhere. Now more than ever, celebrate the freedom to read at your library and read an old favorite or a new banned book during Banned Books Week!

Please call the library (269-3900) or visit our website (oscarfoss.org) for more information about these or any of our other programs or events. There is always something happening at the Oscar Foss Memorial Library! Library Hours are: Monday; 2pm-8pm, Tuesday & Wednesday; 10am-5pm, Thursday; 5pm-8pm, Friday; 2pm-5pm, Saturday; 9am-Noon.

Nighthawk Hollow Seniors

Submitted By Beverly A. Goodrich, Secretary

The Nighthawk Hollow Seniors met on Wednesday, September 3 at the Barnstead Town Hall at 12 noon. Everyone brought their own sandwich and drink. Six teddy bears joined us for the “Teddy Bear’s Picnic.”

A short business meeting followed. Members then enjoyed a game called LCR. It was loads of fun, and we’re all looking forward to playing it again soon.

At our next meeting on Wednesday, October 1, we will go to the Red Apple Buffet in Concord. We will carpool form the Barnstead Town Hall, leaving at 11:15 AM.

To join our group, just come - the dues are only $4. Please call the President, Christine Sanborn at 875-2676. All are welcome!

Thank You

Thank you to the voters of Barnstead, Gilmanton and also Belmont and Tilton for your support on Tuesday in the primary for County commissioner, District 2.

I will do my best to be worthy of the votes which you gave me.

Dick Burchell
