1000 Books Before
Kindergarten!
The Oscar Foss Memorial Library is excited to
participate in The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. This program
encourages parents and caregivers to provide positive, nurturing early
experiences by reading aloud to their children regularly. Through their
partnership, Upstart and the 1000 Books Foundation have designed
materials and incentives that help libraries, early childhood centers,
and other organizations promote the program.
Research shows that the most reliable
predictor of school success is being read to at home during early
childhood. The brain develops more rapidly during the first three years
of a child’s life than at any other time during the lifespan. Reading to
children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare
children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed.
Most important, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of
books and reading.
You can register for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the
library or online at oscarfoss.org. The library will be providing the
materials needed to participate at no cost to families.
Please call the library (269-3900) or visit
our website (oscarfoss.org) for more information about these or any of
our other programs or events. There is always something happening at the
Oscar Foss Memorial Library! Library hours are Mondays from 2 to 8 p.m.,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 5 to 8
p.m., Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
Letter Of Thanks
The Barnstead PTO Board would like to thank everyone for a great year.
When all of us came to the board brand-new to this last summer, we
weren’t even sure where to begin. However, together with the help
of a very supportive community, we found our way and had an extremely
successful year.
Although some of our more public events were the Make and Take Craft
Event and Teacher Appreciation Week, our efforts spanned the entire
school year and ranged from hosting a Gingko Tree contest to providing a
Pumpkin Patch for our Pre-K to 5th graders to offering free coffee at
the school district meeting. We also helped supplement resources,
in the form of volunteers and materials, for school-run events such as
the Book Fair and the Veterans Day assembly. Beyond that, as a
board we decided early on that a large part of our focus this year would
be service-oriented, so we worked diligently all year to get things like
socks, undergarments, boots, and food into the hands of BES students who
needed them.
We would like to thank the numerous individuals who donated time, ideas,
and raffle items throughout the year. In addition to these
individuals, we’d also like to thank the following local businesses who
made donations: All American Automotive, B-Boys Auto Repair, Christian
Michael Studio, The Circle Restaurant, Cleasby Hair Salon, Combustion
Auto, Concord Headlines, Danis Market, Dominick’s Pizza, Pasta & Things,
Duane Family Farm, Hannaford (Alton), ImaJenAtion Photography,
Integrative Skin Care, Jack’s Pizza, J N R Auto, Joe King’s, Lighthouse
Therapeutic Massage, Maple Street Church, Sissy’s Sweets and Ice Cream,
Star Fall Crochet, Sugar Coat Chari’s, Tiers of Joy, Town Pizza, and The
White Buffalo.
If you’d like to be a part of next year’s PTO Board or even if you’d
just like to participate in the election process, please plan to attend
our public meeting on June 1st at 6:00 p.m. in the BES Library. We
would love strong attendance for this meeting as we elect the new
members of the board for the 2016-2017 school year. For more
information on this or for more specifics about the break-down of this
year’s accomplishments, visit our Facebook page or go to

Nighthawk Hollow
Seniors
Submitted By Beverly A.
Goodrich, Secretary
On Wednesday, May 4, several members of the
Nighthawk Hollow Seniors met at the home of the President, Christine
Sanborn, and enjoyed bird watching during and after lunch.
For the June1 meeting, we will be traveling to
the President’s summer cottage on Suncook Lake in Barnstead. Her contact
number is 875-2676. Please bring dimes, swimsuit, lunch, and drink. We
will gather there at noontime.
Barnstead won the championship in the Suncook
Valley Middle School Softball League on Saturday with pitcher Megan
Sarno on the mound. This was their 4th championship lead by Coach Matt
Rayno and assistant coaches Lexie and Nicole. The girls from Barnstead
and Chichester played hard. There was great support from all the
parents, families and fans!
