Letter To The
Editor
Dear Editor,
In a recent letter to the editor, Elaine
Swinford touted her conservative positions. Since she is running to
represent us in Concord, I think we should examine her past history when
she was last there.
According to a 2012 NH Firearms Coalition
mailing, Elaine voted against a bill that would have allowed gun owners
unjustly denied their right to carry, the right to appeal to Superior
Court. It also stated that she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to
water down Constitutional Carry.
I personally watched Elaine work against the
taxpayers in a County Budget meeting on 3/14/11. In that meeting, any
effort at relief for the taxpayers was shot down. Disgusted by all the
talk of conservative values, Elaine stated that “There are
Conservatives, and there are Republicans.” This she stated in front of
the committee and the public, as noted by me in a letter to the Editor
at the time.
The voters of Barnstead must decide who they
will send to represent their best interests in Concord. With all due
respect, for me, that choice is not Elaine Swinford.
Respectfully submitted,
Don Walker
“Barnfield”
Christmas Softball Tournament
Submitted By Jamie
Thorogood
The “Barnfield” Christmas Softball Tournament
is a softball tournament being held to benefit the children of Barnstead
and Pittsfield. All money raised will be divided between the Barnstead
Elementary School and the Town of Pittsfield Fire Department to purchase
gifts for needy children this Christmas. Nine softball teams have
committed to play the weekend of September 16-18 for the town’s
children. Each team has paid an entry fee of $150.00.
Our goal is for each town to get $1000.00
each. (This will be given in a certified bank check). We are almost
there but not quite. I am looking for individuals, businesses or
organizations that would be willing to donate financially to this. Any
amount helps us get to our goal.
I would like to publicly thank the following
businesses that have already stepped forward in helping us by either
donating financially or donating items to raffle: Tami Mousseau-BHHS
Verani Realty, Main Street Grill & Bar, Bell Brothers, Donna Ward-Exit
Reward Realty, Buzy Beez Child Care Center, Rasco Plumbing and Heating,
LLC, Globe Firesuits, Town Pizza, Custom Ink, Combustion Motorworks,
LLC, Cleasby’s Hair Salon, Tim’s Truck Capital, P. R. Russell, and JAR
Race Engines.
I would also like to invite everyone to come
out and watch a game. The games will take place at Tilton Hill Ball
Field-Pittsfield. Concessions will run all weekend; with Hamburgers,
Hotdogs, Soda, Ice Cream, etc being sold to benefit the Pittsfield Youth
Baseball Association. We will have a 50/50 raffle, as well as raffles
for items.
If you would like to help us help the towns, please email me, Jamie
Thoroughgood at [email protected]. Thank you!
Rally Day – Kids
Dino Fest
Have you ever seen a life-size Leviathan skull? Or real dinosaur
eggs? Do you have a child who would love to learn more about
dinosaurs? Want a fun (and FREE) event to take the family to?
If so, mark your calendars for Sunday, September 11th, and plan to join
us at the Center Barnstead Christian Church for some DINO-mite fun!

be sharing his dinosaur bones, claws and jaws.
Mr. Veit will kick off our Rally Day with a presentation on the true
history of dinosaurs starting at 9:00 AM. Then the kids will play a
bunch of dinosaur themed carnival games. Our time together with
end with a free cook-out lunch. This is the third of three
meetings at which Mr. Veit will be speaking. The first one is on
Friday, September 9th at 7:00 PM talking about Creation vs Evolution.
The second one is on Saturday, September 10th at 7:00 PM talking about
“Prove – It Happened” looking at three of the most attacked Bible
stories and prove they really took place. Mark your
calendars!! You won’t want to miss this DINO-mite weekend September
9-11th. This will be a fun and exciting time for the whole family!
All events will take place at the church. The Center Barnstead

Local Woman Wins Contest To Sing The National Anthem
Kathy Kelley of Center Barnstead is experiencing her “15 minutes of
fame.” She was one of dozens of entries in the Safety Insurance
National Anthem Contest on WOKQ. Singers sent in links to videos
of them singing the National Anthem. The radio station narrowed it
down to five finalists. Then, during the week of 8/22 – 8/26, one
finalist per day was played on the radio and the videos were posted
online for the public to cast their votes. There were about 900
votes cast and Ms. Kelley won with 33%.
Although Center Barnstead has been her home for 20 years, she only
recently became more involved in the community when she started working
in Pittsfield at Epping Well & Pump on Main Street in February and
singing with the worship team at the Pittsfield Campus of Grace Capital
Church at 55 Barnstead Road, in June. She’s also part of the
Barnstead Community Grange, (Barnstead Area) Women in Business,
Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce, Barnstead Old Home Day Committee and a
member of the Dove Singers, whose director, Gayle Troy, is the HR
Director at Globe Manufacturing here in Pittsfield.
“Being part of this community, both in Barnstead and Pittsfield, is such
a blessing. We have so many volunteers who give of their time to
help connect and serve people. I think many of the votes came from those
connections.” said Kelley. “I did it on the spur of the moment and sent
in the video the day before they stopped accepting entries. At 49
years old, I took a leap of faith to leave my company of 25 years and
start a new career, which I absolutely love, so when I thought about
putting in an entry, I decided to take a second leap of faith and see
what happened!
Once she won, Kathy received a phone call from the Fisher Cats and they
invited her to sing the National Anthem at the game on Friday, 9/2.
She figured this would be a great time to practice not fainting while
singing in front of thousands of people.
“Sincere thanks to everyone who voted and
shared the contest info!”
Good luck to Kathy on October 1st at Delta
Dental stadium!

Home Food Preservation Workshop
Ann Hamilton is a field specialist in food safety with the food and
agriculture team for the University of New Hampshire Cooperative
Extension in Carroll County. She will be the featured speaker at
the Barnstead Community Grange Meeting to be held at the Oscar Foss
Memorial Library in Barnstead on Monday night, September 19 from 6:30 –
8:30. There is no charge for this workshop and finger foods will
be provided.
Per Ann, “Gardens are in full production and, hopefully, brimming with
an overabundance of vegetables. The joys of gardening are many but what
do you do with all those extra vegetables? Your neighbors may start
running the other way if you begin to offer too many zucchini or
cucumbers. Consider home food preservation. All your hard work and
patience will pay off this coming winter when you get to enjoy those
summer vegetables. One of the nice things about home food preservation
is that you know how the food was grown and prepared. Home food
preservation includes both freezing and canning. Preserving food
at home is a rewarding way to capture the taste of New Hampshire grown
fruits and vegetables to enjoy all year long!”
We hope many of our Barnstead Community
neighbors will come out to learn more about great ways to preserve the
fruits of their labors… (or is it the “veggies” of their labors).
Barnstead-Alton-Gilmanton Republican Committee To Meet
The Barnstead-Alton-Gilmanton Republican
Committee (BARC’G) has announced that their next meeting will be held
Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 pm at J.J. Goodwin’s Restaurant (upstairs
dining room), 769 Suncook Valley Highway (Rt 28), in Center Barnstead.
BARC’G Members and guests have heard from a variety of Republican
candidates at their meetings over the past months. Tuesday’s
meeting on the 13th promises to be very interesting; the results of the
New Hampshire Primary will be “rolling” in that evening! Since a
number of BARC’G members have been campaigning for themselves and/or for
their favorite candidates since candidate signup ended on June 10, this
will be the culmination of 3 months of active campaigning. Of
course the intent, immediately upon hearing the results, is for all
Republicans to unify behind the primary winners and work to elect their
nominees.
BARC’G meetings are open to all Republicans
and like-minded Independents from Alton, Barnstead, and Gilmanton, and
any other towns in New Hampshire. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear
from the various candidates running for statewide office at this meeting
to help you make up your mind regarding whom to vote for. There is no
charge to attend the meetings.
Per their usual meeting format, if you’re
interested in having dinner (at your option) or wish to socialize before
the meeting, plan to arrive as early as 5:30pm.
The Committee reminds you to bring a non-perishable food item (cans of
soup, tuna fish, etc, etc) to the meeting for distribution to local food
pantries.
For more information, please check the Committee’s website,
BARC-NewHampshire.com, or send an email to
[email protected]
or [email protected].
