Letter To The Editor

It’s amazing how almost all Concord Monitor political cartoons and commentaries are anti-Republican.  On 11/18, one cartoon has the Republicans stuck in the 18th century, another cartoon accuses Republicans of being nasty and misleading the voters, and a commentary by Jean Stimmel lambasts the “Pledge” and argues for a broad-based tax.
Stimmel, a member of the Monitor Board of Contributors, says she agrees with the Monitor.  Stimmel says if the Pledge continues, services must be cut, “further fraying the social safety net ….”  Stimmel argues that a broad-based tax will create more revenue and somehow reduce the burden on lower and middle class citizens.  Stimmel concludes by saying NH citizens are “no longer the sturdy folks” and “despite the myth of Yankee independence, we never were.”

First, the NH budget increased over Two Billion Dollars in the last four years, while the population decreased and every other State in America cut its budget.  As a result of the excessive spending, your across-the-board taxes significantly increased during the recession.  NH is doing better than some, but imagine how well we could be doing without the big tax increases.

Second, I strongly disagree with Stimmel, and am happy to report that Yankee independence is no myth! I know and relate to many sturdy independent Yankees! The naysayers ignore the fact that Governor Lynch still brags about NH’s highly-ranked quality of life, highly-ranked education system, low unemployment, etc.  They also ignore the fact that all those states with broad-based taxes and high tax burdens rank below NH in these areas!

I’m proud to live in NH where the majority still pride themselves on their Yankee independence and ingenuity – people who would rather be free and independent than controlled by an over-bearing over-taxing government.

Out Of Your Attic Thrift Shop News

Think of our Thrift Shop as a place to buy Christmas gifts that won’t break your bank!  There are earrings, necklaces, Santa Keys (nicely wrapped), glassware in boxes, candles and holders, photo albums, and nice ornaments.

There are ribbons, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, books for children and adults, hand knitted hats and many cute decorations to select from.  For the traditionalist, there is a set of the “vintage” outdoor big light bulbs, with spares, as well as sets with small bulb lights.

There are holiday mugs so you can share hot cocoa with a friend.  For one who really cares, there is an exercise machine to help shed the effects of the holiday.

Stop in and see us on Tues. & Thurs. 8-4, Wed. 11-4 and Sat. 10-4 at 345 Suncook Valley Hwy, Route 28, in Chichester close to the Pittsfield town line.
