The Chichester Central School PTO Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 3rd, at 10 a.m., sharp. Children from Pre K - 5th grade are invited to bring your Easter basket, collect Easter eggs, and visit with the Easter Bunny! This event will take place rain or shine in the Chichester Central School Yard.

The Chichester Parks and Recreation Commission will be holding a Carpenter Park Visioning Meeting on Saturday morning April 10th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Carpenter Park Pavilion. The primary purpose of this informal gathering is to solicit the ideas and desires of the community to aid in the development of a comprehensive master plan for Carpenter Park. The Commission is looking to gather information on how the Park may be improved and enhanced to serve all segments of the Town’s population and what new facilities, programs, and activities could be developed.

It is anticipated that with the development of a specific Carpenter Park Master Plan the Parks & Recreation Commission will be applying for Federal/State Grant monies to aid in any new or upgraded enhancements to the Park. Coffee and donuts will be served.

Chichester Grange will meet on Wednesday, April 7, upstairs in the Grange Hall. The evening will begin with a turkey supper at 6 p.m. to raise money for donations to the NH State Grange Youth causes. A business meeting will follow at 7 p.m. The Youth Night program will be presented by Mary West.

The Chichester Library has set their 2010 book sale dates: May 8th, June 12th, July 17th, August 14th, September 11th, and October 9th. Please mark your calendars. All book sales are from 8 to 1, rain or shine.  Hope to see you there this year to drop by and take home a bag of enjoyment.

Happy Birthday to Avonne Jarvis on April 1 and to Angela Millette on April 7.

Chichester Historical Society Pound Road
Submitted By Walter Sanborn

Pound Road is the road running off Main Street at the top of Langmaid’s Hill and continuing behind the Chichester Town Library, formerly the old Town Hall, and ending at Center Road.

This road is a range road about a mile long and never had any houses on it until recent years with two new houses on the end near the library.

Why this road was built is a mystery to me.  The only purpose of building this road may be that it was a short cut for the residents of Bear Hill to access travel to town affairs at the Town Hall.

The Chichester Library was originally the Town Hall which was the first meeting house built by the early settlers.

Being first a meeting house and later a Town Hall   it was one of the early meeting places and frequently used for public meetings.  It certainly would shorten the distance to travel from Bear Hill down Center Road to  Pound Road and thence to the Town Hall rather than traveling from Bear Hill down to North Chichester and then up Main Street to the hall.

The last record I have found that the town repaired the road was in 1872.

The New England Telephone Company had a trunk line from Concord to Pittsfield that went across country and crossed Pound Road at about mid point and was an access to service this telephone line.

The last use of this road was used by Edgar Reed to get to a sawmill and shingle mill which he used in later years.

This road was of course named because it was the road upon which the Chichester Town Pound was located.

Although the exact location of the town pound is not known it is believed to be on the North side of   Pound Road behind the former town hall, now the Chichester Library where the home of Shirley Brown is now located.

This is the last town road that I will report of the history of town roads.

The only road that remains unsolved is where the name Granny Howe Road originated from and will probably remain so until her resurrection and we can ask her where she lived.

An article about the town pound will be my next historical subject to follow.
