Chichester Old Home Day Parade Marshall Walter L. Sanborn
Walter Langmaid Sanborn is well known for his collection of
historical writings and deep knowledge of the Town of Chichester.
Throughout his lifelong residency he has served the town in numerous
ways, but the closest to his heart has been serving in the volunteer
fire department.
Walter was only sixteen years old when the
Chichester Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1936 and would
have to wait two more years to “officially” become a full member.
His enthusiasm for the fire fighting profession kept him busy,
however, as Walter still attended meetings and work details and
responded to fire calls with his father Leon and brother Richard,
both Charter Members of the C.V.F.D. At the same time, his uncle
John Langmaid served as the first Chief. Walter lived with his
family above the L.A. Sanborn Store directly across the road from
the town’s first firehouse (now the location of the Chichester
Historical Society).
After becoming a regular member in 1938
Walter continued his service in several ways. In 1950, the
department constructed a homemade tanker on a used Chevy chassis.
Walter used his welding skills to build the tank and body. In 1953,
he was elected Deputy Chief and in 1959 became Fire Chief, a
position he would hold for fifteen years. During his years as Chief,
he worked to build the C.V.F.D. by modernizing apparatus, improving
firefighter alerting systems, and participating in regional training
and mutual aid systems.
The Department formed an Emergency
Medical Squad in 1975 with Walter supporting the venture. Although
he admittedly did not care for the line of work, he became a
dedicated and active member. The time period also coincided with his
35 year service as the Town Forest Fire Warden, a position for which
he dispensed hundreds of burning permits and enforced the state
burning laws.
In the Sanborn family, fire service was a family
affair. Walter’s wife, Alice, was a Red Phone operator and
dispatcher, as well as an auxiliary and medical squad member. Son,
Peter, was an original member of the junior fire department and
medical squad. Younger son, Paul, joined the department at age 16
and continues active membership to this day.
Walter retired from
the position of Fire Chief in 1976 but continued to be an active
member of the department, responding to emergency calls until just a
few years ago. Although he no longer responds to calls, Walter
remains a regular at department meetings, dispensing his wisdom,
wit, and opinions to newer generations of firefighters.
Chichester is proud to honor and thank Walter Sanborn for his 75
years of service to the Chichester Volunteer Fire Department. Walter
will be Parade Marshall for this year’s Old Home Day Parade, which
celebrates the Chichester Fire Department’s 75th anniversary.
