Chichester Heritage Commission New Hampshire’s One-Room Rural Schools

The Chichester Heritage Commission has received a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to present “New Hampshire’s One Room Schools: The Romance and Reality.” This program will take place at the Grange Hall, 54 Main Street, on Thursday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m.

Steve Taylor, former NH’s Commissioner of Agriculture, will lead this public discussion on the lasting legacies of the one-room school house and how they shape education in present times. Hundreds of one-room schools provided the backbone of primary education to generations of children. Although these schools were often revered in literature and lore, they were beset with problems, many of which are very familiar in today’s educational environment.

Mr. Taylor is an independent scholar, farmer and journalist. He was the founding executive director of the NH Humanities Council and is a lifelong student of the State of New Hampshire’s rural culture.

This program is free and open to all. Ample parking is available. The building is handicapped accessible.

The Chichester Heritage Commission and its program partner, the Chichester Historical Society are pleased to offer this presentation. Refreshments will be served after the program.

For more information about this program, please contact Lucille Noel at 798-5709.

Out Of Your Attic Thrift Shop News

Submitted By Carol Hendee

Spring is here and so is our spring merchandise; spring jackets, hoodies, a few fleece for the chilly nights, sweatshirts and shorts are out.

One beautiful pale blue prom gown left. It’s a size small for $20. Selling out leather jackets in the 3rd room for $3.00 each; long raincoats $1.00.

Many thanks to LR for providing an answer to a customer’s wish for two full size beds! It is very much appreciated.

“Wants” at this time include Barbie-like dolls, Twister game, and girls tights. The homeless are running out of Christmas supplies of toothpaste, toothbrushes, hygiene items like shampoo, body wash and lotion. Moist towelettes are also very useful.

We are on Route 28, near the Pittsfield line, and are open Mon. 8-12; Tues. and Thurs. 8-4; Wed. 11-4; Sat. 10-4. Call us at 247-7191.
