Chichester Public Library News

‘Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and all through the house, all creatures were stirring.  Yes, they were stirring all of the goodies that would appear on tables the next day (tomorrow), as we all give thanks.  The library wishes you a great holiday and gives thanks for your support and patronage!  We will not be open on Thanksgiving or on Friday.  We anticipate regular hours on Saturday.

Speaking of laden tables and food, please remember the library accepts donations of food for our struggling residents all year long.  All donations are graciously accepted.

The Down Cellar Writers’ Group will be meeting on Monday, November 28th, at 7 p.m.

Friday, December 2nd at 7 p.m., brings Lakes Region poets Barbara Bald and Beth Fox to the library where they will introduce their newly published book, Other Voices/Other Lives, inspired by the stories of senior citizens.  Refreshments will be served.  (Please see separate article on this topic.) Another reminder as winter approaches, the library follows the lead of Chichester Central School’s for closure because of inclement weather.

Platinum Barbershop Welcomes Christie LaValley,  Now Open 7 Days A Week

Platinum Batbershop has made some big changes.  We would like to welcome Christie LaValley who works on Sundays and Mondays.  Adding her to the team allows the shop to be open every day of the week.  Christie is a Master Barber and Cosmetologist.  She brings with her years of experience as she worked as the Director of Education at Michael’s School of Hair Design and owned her own barbershop in Manchester for 10 years.  Christie moved to Pittsfield in May and wants to become part of the local community. There is no better way to get to know people then in the barbershop.

Christie is also a New Hampshire Justice of the Peace and ordained minister. She has performed close to a hundred weddings and elopements in the central NH area.  If you have any upcoming nuptials please feel free to contact Christie at the barbershop or at her email [email protected].  Platinum Barbershop is now offering a groomsmen package.  This allows a party to rent out the shop for 2-3 hours while getting barbering services.  Packages can be booked before/after hours as well as during normal business hours.  This will provide a place for the men to have a little bonding time over pizza and beer while getting cleaned up for the big event.  For more information visit our website.

In the near future we will be having a Beer and Braids night where Dads can get hands on experience learning how to style their daughters hair.

So if you have nuptials in the near future or just need a great haircut visit Platinum Barbershop and Shave Parlor. Tyler and Christie are looking forward to working with you.

Poets Coming To Chichester Library

Lakes Region poets Barbara Bald and Beth Fox will introduce their newly published book, Other Voices/Other Lives, at a reading hosted by the Chichester Library on Friday, December 2nd  at 7 p.m.  (This is a change from a previously published date.)  The book is inspired by senior citizens’ stories and has gathered high praise from New England’s poetry luminaries.

Robert Demaree, author of Fathers and Sons, Mileposts and After Labor Day, says:  “In Other Voices/Other Lives, Bald takes us along in her volunteer service with senior adults, bringing her distinctive poetic voice to the many stories she has learned from the seniors she has come to know. These fine poems are part of her service to them as well as to the reading public.”

Charlotte Cox, author of Currents in the Stream, adds: “This is a wonderfully moving look at the world through other people’s eyes. Bald finds her inspiration in the stories shared by elderly residents in an assisted living community. She elevates their words through her own expert poetry and brings their memories to life for readers of all ages. These poems are full of love, loss, sadness, humor, and the triumph of the human spirit.”

Two years ago poet Barbara Bald and her friend Beth Fox decided to explore the possibility of reading poetry aloud to assisted living residents of Sugar Hill Retirement Community in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. To their surprise, they found that not only did the residents enjoy hearing the poems, but also that the poems themselves stirred memories inside each listener. This sharing became a way of helping folks connect with each other on a deeper level. They are still reading to these residents twice every month, and where possible, they are using the residents’ words to record their memories and turn them into poems. Together they have created both individual and group poems, several of which have already been published in journals. Other Voices/Other Lives is the published culmination of those efforts.

Barbara Bald was a science educator for middle school students for twenty-two years. She also worked for NHPTV in the area of instructional television, and later was a counselor and a teacher of life education. Presently she offers integrative enrichment opportunities for both children and adults. Her poems have been published in a variety of anthologies: The Other Side of Sorrow, The 2008 and 2010 Poets’ Guide to New Hampshire, The Widow’s Handbook, and other anthologies published online. They have also appeared in The Northern New England Review, Avocet, Off the Coast and in multiple issues of The Poetry Society of New Hampshire’s publication: The Poets’ Touchstone, where they have won prizes in both national and member contests. Her recent full-length book is called Drive-Through Window and her chapbook on aging is entitled Running on Empty.

Beth Fox, who is a contributor to the anthology Other Voices/Other Lives, is a retired teacher and art-lover. Beth was active in the Wakefield Arts Council for many years.  She is now absorbed in the connections among the arts and how the arts affect our lives. Her poems have been published in The Poets’ Touchstone, Piscataqua Poems: A Seacoast Anthology, Avocet and The 2010 Poets Guide to New Hampshire. She was a finalist in the Center for the Arts annual poetry contest and Touchstone’s member contest.

The authors encourage audience members who come to this reading to participate in an open mic time after the reading, so bring something of your own to share. There will be a display of books for sale and browsing, with ample time to meet other creative people.  Refreshments will be available to enhance the pleasure of the event.
