Chichester Town Library News

The Library would like to thank everyone who supports the used book sales.  We’re doing well with them, especially considering the construction challenges, race weekend, etc.  We’ve also had quite a few out-of-towners who have discovered us and made large purchases.  Contributions of books, puzzles, cd’s and dvd’s would be appreciated to fill in the gaps made by the extensive purchases.

The next used book sale is scheduled for August 27th.  In recognition of our local farmers and home gardeners, we are co-sponsoring a Farmer’s Market with the Grange on the same day as the sale.  It will be held in the Grange Parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon.  Only 10 tables can be accommodated, so please call the Library to reserve a spot, as soon as possible.  Vendors will keep their profits.

Just a heads-up for the Summer Reading Program scheduled for Saturday, August 13th, at 7:00 p.m.  This will be a “Paper Airplane Tournament,” and our librarian, Lisa, has already been practicing with a replica of the airplane which has the record for being thrown the farthest.  An interested library patron has donated a $30 prize for this event.  (Thank you from all of us!) The Down Cellar Poets is scheduled to meet on Monday, August 1st, at 7 p.m.

The Book Club will be meeting at noon on August 4th.

The August Memory Café will be held on Friday, the 12th, at 2 p.m. at the Chichester Historical Society, 49 Main St.

Obituaries

Frederick E. Estes, Jr.

Frederick E. Estes, Jr. (Fred), 70, a longtime resident of Chichester, passed away peacefully at Epsom Health Care in Epsom, NH on June 29, 2016.

Fred was born in Portsmouth, NH on November 13, 1945 and grew up in Portsmouth, Dover and Northwood. He entered the U.S. Army in 1963 and served at Fort Dix, New Jersey during the Vietnam War.

He worked at Rumford Press in Concord for many years as a pressman and also worked in the office. He later worked as a school bus driver for Concord School District and for H.A. Marston, Inc. in Pittsfield.

Fred enjoyed gardening and puttering around outside. He loved having coffee and donuts and “shooting the bull” with the “townies” at the corner store, and with his co-workers at the bus companies. He loved meandering drives along country roads, documentaries and movies on historical wars and battles, and animal stories.

Fred could come out with the darnedest things and funniest remarks! He will be remembered for his dry wit and making people laugh, his love of nature animals and birds, and for helping small animals.

Fred is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sandra (Graves) Estes of Chichester, his daughters, Leah Estes of Chichester, and Laurelyn Estes of Chichester; stepchildren; a sister-in-law, Anne (Graves) Valence of Pittsfield; a brother-in-law, Jacques Valence of Pittsfield; his mother-in-law, Janet Graves of Loudon; a niece and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Joan (Estes) Fairbanks of Salem.

A memorial service with full Military Honors was held at the NH Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen, NH on Saturday, July 16, 2016.

The Cremation Society on NH is assisting the family with arrangements.
