Another Great Benefit Italian Dinner sponsored by the American Legion Post 112, Short Falls Road, Epsom, NH, will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009, 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.
Donation: Adults, $7.00; Children, 6-12, $3.00; Under 6, Free.


Bring your appetite. The menu will consist of spaghetti, lasagna, salad, bread, beverage, and dessert.


Door prizes and 50/50 raffle will be held.
Proceeds will benefit Post 112 Community Activities.

 



SALTY DOG POTTERY will offer a set of pottery workshops for students during April School Vacation, April 20 – 24th.

Epsom Public Library News


The library is offering a six-week arts and crafts class designed for children ages 7-12, beginning Monday, April 20th from 4-5:30 p.m. The children need to be accompanied by an adult who also enjoy participating in the activities. A $15.00 materials fee will be charged per person. Mary Frambach of the Gingerbread Cat art studio is the instructor. Anyone interested is urged to sign up right away as there are only 24 openings.


April 12-18 is National Library Week. If you’ve yet to visit our new Library, this is a great time to do so. We will gladly give you a tour of the facility. Light refreshments will served  throughout the week.


During April School Vacation the library will show the movie, Beethoven’s Big Break, (Rated PG) on Monday, April 20th at 1 p.m. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.


On April 22 at 6:30 p.m. William Schultz of Epsom will present a concert of Irish, American, and English traditional music on the fiddle and concertina. Bill first became interested in Irish traditional music as a student at Rutgers College in New Jersey where he learned to play the fiddle and concertina and attended coffeehouse performances and festivals. These experiences led him to wide varieties of traditional music and dance. He is well known among the Morris dance and traditional dance crowd as a singer of ballads, and he appears weekly at the Barley House in Concord. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the program is for all ages and refreshments will be served.


To encourage and support the celebration of Earth Day on April 22, the Library will have trash bags available from April 15-29.


Master Gardener Workshops Planned: On April 28 at 7 p.m. the Library will sponsor “Perennials,” the first in a series of workshops presented by the University of New Hampshire Master Gardeners Speakers’ Bureau. The following topics will be covered: : What is a perennial?, Temperature zones, selecting plants, how to plant, maintenance, multiplying by dividing, and integrated pest management. Future topics include Gardening Basics (vegetables), on May 12 and Container Gardening on May 26. Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who share their enthusiasm with the general public. Initiated in 1993, more than 600 Master Gardener volunteers have been selected as volunteer educators.

 


 

Ivy Green Rebekah Lodge Epsom


Ivy Green Rebekah Lodge # 36 of Epsom is hosting a “Swinging Sixties Dance” on Sat. April 18th at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Odd Fellows Hall on Short Falls Road. Dress in your favorite sixties outfit if you want and join the fun! A $5.00 donation per person is requested. There will be raffle prizes and snacks available. The dance is BYOB and donations for the snack table are always welcome. For information call Vickie Benner at 736-4707. Come celebrate spring with us!


Epsom’s next Scrap Booking Bonanza hosted by Ivy Green Rebekah Lodge #36 will be held on Sunday, April 26th from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Epsom Public Library. Bring donation of toiletries etc. for our soldiers serving in Iraq. Every item you bring will help you win the door prizes. Gifts will be given to all who reserve a seat. Call Jennifer 736-8681 or Jill 736-9091 to reserve your spot! This is an event you don’t want to miss so bring your supplies and enjoy an afternoon of scrap booking and meeting new friends. Food and beverages will be included in the $7.00 fee.

 


 

Beethoven’s Big Break At The Epsom Public Library


The Epsom Public Library will show the movie “ Beethoven’s Big Break”, on Monday, April 20th at 1 p.m. in the library’s large meeting room. The movie is free, great for families and is rated PG. Plan to come and join the fun. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. For more info call the library.


Story Time continues on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 3:30 p..m. The children listen to stories, sing songs and enjoy simple crafts. April themes will include spring, flowers and bunnies! Toddler time is on Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 10-7 and Saturday, 9-1. Plan to stop in and check out our great selection of books, audio books, and DVD’s.

Complaints Included: Criminal Mischief, 1; Motor Vehicle, 8; Civil, 4; Suspicious Activity, 6; Animal, 1; Juvenile, 1; Noise, 1.


Reports Included: Assault, 1; Theft of Gas, 1.


Checks Included: Abandoned 911 Calls, 4; Suspicious Vehicles, 3; Suspicious Activities, 2; Suspicious Subjects, 1; Abandoned Vehicles, 2.


There was one Bad Check Received and two Arrests.

 


 

April 22 Volunteer To Help With Roadside Clean-up


Now that this winter’s snow banks have receded, the trash has emerged. Won’t you do your part and help Clean-up Epsom? The Epsom Conservation Commission and the Litter Free New Hampshire Program appeals to you to adopt a section of road, trail or waterway. Perhaps you are part of a group or organization or a resident that is willing to help with this effort. Since 1990 the Commission has encouraged folks to volunteer their time to clean up some area or section of road or trail that is meaningful to them.


Trash Bags will be made available at the Epsom Central School, the Library and the Town Office April 15th-29th.


 We encourage folks to get out there the week of Earth Day which is April 22nd. Our recycling center will be accepting roadside trash during that week.


We have many miles of road. The commission thanks all those who get out there every year and do their part. So won’t you help? Adopt a section of road or area that is meaningful to you. Do it in honor of Spring, the natural beauty of Epsom, Earth Day and the joy of seeing clean roadsides, trails and public areas. Pick a time that works for you, your family or friends.


Participants will receive Daffodil Bulbs for their participation if you E-mail or mail in how you participated. Distribution of daffodils will be the first week of October.

Obituaries


 

Barbara A. Hanus


Epsom - Barbara A. Hanus, born Oct. 22, 1915, in Concord, daughter of Albert and Grace (Prince) Hanus, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Epsom Healthcare Center in Epsom.


Ms. Hanus attended Concord Schools and was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She also attended the Eliot Pearson School of Child Development of Tufts University and earned a Master of Social Service from Smith College School for Social Work.


She worked for several years as a nursery school teacher in the Boston area, transferring to become involved in protective services care, adoption, and children in foster care in the Department of Child Welfare Services in 1977. A member of the National Association of Social Workers, she was a certified social worker, and she was instrumental in establishing the New Hampshire Task Force on Child Abuse.


Ms. Hanus served on a number of committees and commissions that affected children and their families as well as the laws that related to them.


Involved in community activities, Ms. Hanus was active in Zonta International, the Federated Business and Professional Women's Clubs, as well as the local mental health centers, Salvation Army advisory committee and the Philbrook Children's Foundation. After her retirement, she served in the New Hampshire Legislature from 1981 to 1993.
Ms. Hanus moved to Englewood, Fla., in 1987, where she joined the Edgewater Club. She was a communicant of St. Raphael's Church.


Graveside services were held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord.


Memorial donations may be sent to the Carmelite Monastery, 297 Pleasant St., Concord 03301; or to DASH, P.O. Box 1484, Englewood, Fla. 34295.


Bennett Funeral Home of Concord was in charge of arrangements.

 


 

Helen Giarratana


Epsom - Helen (Raimo) Giarratana, 70, of Lord’s Mill Road, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House.


She was born December 24, 1930, in Boston.


Helen was raised and educated in Everett, Mass. She was married in, lived in and raised her three children in Everett.


Helen later remarried Charles Giarratana. They lived in Malden, Mass., where Helen worked in the Head Start Program. She attended Harvard University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973.


In 1990, Helen and Charlie moved to Epsom. While in New Hampshire, Helen worked at H&R Block. She was also a member of the Epsom/Chichester Lions Club. Helen’s favorite pastime was going to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.


She is survived by her spouse, Charles Giarratana; three children, Joanne Staples of Northwood, Robert DiStefano of Massachusetts, and Joseph and wife, Rita DiStefano, of Concord; and step-children, Arthur and Linda Giarratana of Florida, and Charles and Diane Giarratana of Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Ami Staples of Northwood and Anne Staples of Somersworth;  step-grandchildren, Charles III, Christopher, Talia and Andrew Giarratana; two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Jacob Osborne; five step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Charlie IV, Dustin, Haley, and Brittany Giarratana; her brother, Joseph F. and Tomasa Raimo of Arizona.


Calling Hours will not be held.


Memorial Services will beheld April 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 180 Loudon Road, Concord.


Memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302.
