See The Shifting Sands Of The Suncook River By Kayak

See the shifting sands of the Suncook River for yourself. Kayak or canoe the Suncook River in Epsom with Friends of the Suncook River. See first hand the dramatic shift in the river’s bed due to the river avulsion caused by the flooding rains in 2006. Naturalist and Epsom Resident Eric Orff will narrate the paddle. Eric Orff has been following the changes in the river since the Great Mother’s Day Flood of 2006.

This event will take place on Father’s Day, June 21st. Participants will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Webster Park launch site (formerly the swimming hole) on Short Falls Road off of Route 28 south in Epsom. The trip will be along quiet waters and run about 2-3 hours. Take out will be just before the Buck Street Dam approximately four miles south by river on Rt. 28. FOSR is asking that all interested parties register with us for the kayak/canoe trip. Please contact Mary Fougere at 269-4264, or email FOSR at [email protected] for further information or to register.

July 20th plan on being there from registration until 11:30am. On succeeding days children will be enrolled in ½ hour lessons, scheduled between 9:00 and 11:00. Children should come prepared to swim. Hair pulled back from faces, plenty of sunscreen and appropriate clothing for the weather. Epsom has had a successful swimming program for many years thanks to the dedicated teachers, aides and families who know how important it is to teach children how to swim and water safety. We hope to see you at the beach. For more information please contact Sonia Noyes at 736-4520.

Questions And Answers

On June 10, 2009, I attended (along with 30-40 other very concerned Epsomites) a Q & A session at the Epsom Town Hall. The doors at the building opened around 6:30pm. Regular matters were brought before the board; news via mail was shared with all. Somewhere around 8:00 the “New Housing Development” idea for Goboro and Depot Roads commenced. At first the development people displayed some colorful (mostly black and white) maps, charts, etc. Discussions, for the most part, were between those representing the project and board members. I have no idea why the project people found it necessary to bring along an attorney. All of a sudden the Epsomites began standing up to be heard. All with a sincere interest in obtaining answers about many phases of this project. One of the project representatives appeared (displaying a red face and increase in speaking volume) to resent some of the questions. Wait until the question “where did all the ground water go to?” comes up. Epsom had better obtain a hold harmless agreement from each and every one of the involved parties. I believe this project will be a total failure. This is not a good time for anyone to be thinking of building or buying a house.

Local Students Earn Degrees From The University Of Vermont

Some 2,240 students were awarded a variety of bachelor’s degrees during the University of Vermont’s 205th Commencement ceremonies on May 17. There were some 410 advanced degrees awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 100 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees at ceremonies of the UVM College of Medicine. A list of local students and the degree earned by each follows:

Amanda Cota of Epsom, received a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management.

Nicole Beaudoin of Pittsfield, received a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration.

Chartered in 1791, UVM was the first college or university in the United States that did not give preference to a religious sect in its charter and the first to allow women to join Phi Beta Kappa. A small, comprehensive university, it blends the academic heritage of a private university with service missions in the land grant tradition.
