Letter

To the Residents of Epsom:
It is with deep regret that I submit my resignation from the Epsom Board of Selectmen, effective September 30, 2010, six months prior to the scheduled end of my term.

After much deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that my commitments and responsibilities to my family are in danger of not being met. It has also occurred to me that due to my commitments to my family, it is also a possibility that I might not be able to fulfill my responsibilities to the Town. Faced with this choice, I have decided that the Town would be better served with a replacement in the role of Selectman.

It has been a privilege to serve the people of Epsom for three and a half years. I have enjoyed working with the Department Heads, the Office Staff, and the other Board members more than I can put into words. People have been extremely supportive and helpful. I will miss it terribly.

I would like to thank Keith Cota and Bob Blodgett for their commitment to the Town of Epsom. Epsom is fortunate to have you and others who are willing and able to serve tirelessly on its behalf.

Sincerely,
Joanne Randall
Chairman,
Board of Selectmen
Epsom, NH

New Rye Church
Celebrates Its Semiquiencentennial
Submitted By Rev. James R. Young, Sr. Pastor, New Rye Church

Historians record that “The Pastorate of Rev. John Tucke began September 23, 1761” when he answered a call first issued to him on June 25, 1761, to be pastor in Epsom. Thus began the origins of New Rye Union Congregational Church.

Through the 250 years since the Rev. Tucke came to Epsom, the congregations that now make up New Rye Congregational Church have gone through many variations and transformations, but the determination to worship God has remained the central focus of the church. It was in 1886 that the Congregational Church of Epsom and the Christian Church of Epsom (which met at the Odd Fellows Hall) combined to form the “Union Congregational Church of New Rye,” from which the current church now takes its name.

The members of New Rye Church now look to celebrate this 250-year spiritual journey with a year-long celebration that will include planned events each month. The kick-off will be on Sunday, September 19th at 2 p.m. with a bus tour of the historic sites where meeting houses and earlier church buildings were located before the current edifice was constructed. The tour will be in the current building, in which the congregation now worships (289 New Rye Road), which is itself over 100 years old. From there, a bus will leave the church at approximately 2:15 p.m. with T.J. Rand - President of the Epsom Historical Society and resident historian of the Town of Epsom - as our guide. The tour will end with refreshments (generously provided by the New Rye Ladies Aid) and fellowship at the Parish Hall.

The public is invited to share in this celebration - please join us.

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, And Pittsfield:
To update the health inspector situation at Epsom’s Old Home Day: the person taking the temperature of the bottled water was not the actual health inspector. He was a member of the Old Home Day committee, who had taken one class in food safety and heard that the health inspector would be coming by that day. So, he scurried around, checking everything that might possibly be a black mark for any of the vendors, to make sure that nobody would be shut down. In the process he checked a number of things – including the water temperature – that the actual inspector wasn’t concerned with in the least. A little learning is a dangerous thing!

It does seem wrong that there are so many detailed regulations on something this simple that a well meaning person, unfamiliar with the field, could try to enforce them and end up doing something as silly as checking the temperature of bottled water. We need to put more emphasis on people being responsible for doing the right thing, and less on making rules and regulations.

Thank you for your vote in the primary!
