It’s time again, and during the holidays there is often a high
demand for blood. On Thursday, January 6th from 3:30 to
8:00 pm, there will be a Red Cross Blood Drive at the Pittsfield
Elementary School on Bow Street, sponsored by the PTO. To
avoid wait time you may call 1-800-Red-Cross (1-800-733-2767)
for an appointment. However, walk-ins are welcome.
While you help save lives by giving blood, Dunkin’ Donuts is
offering “Give a pint - Get a pound”. Child care is
provided for your convenience.
Epsom Public Library News Book Sale
The library will hold a
book sale February 12 – 19 during regular library hours
Donations of clean books, audio books, and videos in good
condition may be dropped off, starting on January 5 during
regular library hours (Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to
7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) Please do
not leave donations outdoors or in the book drop.
The Library
does not accept donations of encyclopedias, textbooks, or
Readers’ Digest condensed books.
Art Exhibit
A
photographic exhibit featuring the work of Udo Rauter of
Chichester will be on display at the library from January 8 to
February 19. The colored photographs are mostly of local
birds, the majority of which are warblers, Dr. Rauter said.
However, some unusual ones such as the snowy owl, the
short-eared owl, and an eagle may also be seen.
Dr. Rauter
was Director of Psychology at New Hampshire Hospital for 30
years but is now retired. He is currently serving on the
Board of the Photographic Society of New Hampshire.
Concurrently with the above, a collection of old postcards of
Epsom will be exhibited in the display cases, courtesy of Muriel
Travato of Epsom. These interesting and historical cards
include pictures of many locations in and around Epsom, some
dating back to the early part of the 20th Century.
Book Club
The book club will meet Wednesday, January 19, to discuss “Still
Alice”, by Lisa Genova. Nominated for Indies Choice Debut
Book of the Year by the American Booksellers Associated, the
book is a compelling debut novel about a 50 year old woman’s
sudden descent into early onset Alzheimer’s disease. (The author
herself holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Harvard University.)
As the author’s web site explains, Alice is a happily married
woman as well as a renowned Harvard professor at the height of
her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her
life. As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her
memory begins to fail her, she receives a devastating diagnosis.
Reminiscent of “A Beautiful Mind”, “Ordinary People” and
“The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time”, still Alice
packs a powerful emotional punch and marks the arrival of a
strong new voice in fiction.
Anyone wishing to participate in
the discussion is invited to stop by the library and pick up a
copy of the book.
Movie Night
The library is initiating a
winter program for adults with the movie, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, a
zany British farce, to be shown on Wednesday, January 12, at
6:30 p.m.
A funeral turns into a crazy debacle of exposed
family secrets and misplaced bodies in this comical romp.
Claudia Puig, of USA TODAY, says, “The lack of propriety and
solemnity is precisely what makes this comic farce so
uproariously funny.”
Popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
