I’m So Excited!

I’m so excited because this year we got to pay an additional $133.00 in Federal Income Tax. First and foremost reason I’m so excited, of course, is that it means we had an "income"! (Unlike New Hampshire’s only "broad based tax" the property tax, which does not care if you have an income or not; fixed income or rising; high sales or low sales. For the middle class, property taxes are pretty much like having a double mortgage! For those on fixed incomes, a mortgage for life!)

Secondly, it feels good to participate in paying for our American social order. I like being a responsible sociable person. We may be lagging a little in infrastructure etc, but compared to the rest of the world, I greatly appreciate our American society. Our history. Our melting pot.

Now, the NH State Legislature and Senate have voted to amend our State Constitution making an income tax unconstitutional! The amendment will be on the ballot this fall, placed there by the libertarian wing of the Republican Party including 12 "Free Staters."

Hmm. I’m wondering, who are these so called "Free Staters" who seem to want to turn our state into the ‘Wild West’? Where did they come from? And what is their goal?

"Between The Covers" with books of Adventure/Suspense, Romance, and Mystery is the theme for the Epsom Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program, which runs July 11 – August 8.

It’s summer time, and the readin’ is easy. We invite you to relax and read adventure, romance, and/or mystery books throughout the five-week program. There is no required list that must be read or any specific number of books. Books relating to each theme will be on display at the library as suggestions only. The focus of the program is fun and enjoyment! You may write a brief review of each book you read and then enter a weekly drawing for prizes. Last year’s weekly prizes included gift certificates at various local businesses and restaurants.

Rick Davidson, an educator at Kingswood in Wolfeboro and a professional photographer and author, will be the kick-off presenter on July 11 with his program, "Mountain Lion Sightings Where They Shouldn’t Be," a dynamic slide show on mountain lions sightings in New England. Registration for the program will be at the library from June 25 – July 7.

The Epsom Public Library will show Family Movies on the following dates. Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:

There’s no House business this week, so I’ll report on the progress of my bills. I sponsored seven and co-sponsored another 20 bills this year – way too many! Eight have been signed by the governor, six passed both the House and the Senate and are on their way, four are in interim study, three passed the House but were killed in the Senate, and six were killed in the House.

Of the bills signed by the governor, HB1170 allows towns to put the estimated tax impact of warrant articles on the ballot, as voted by the people of Epsom. HB1231 removes the prohibition on selling fewer than 12 baby chicks, important since many backyard farmers don’t really want that many chickens. HB1351 protects the confidentiality of information obtained by the boards of funeral directors and allied health professionals: I had intended it for the Board of Medicine, but the subcommittee decided these other boards needed it more and rewrote the bill for me!

HB1448 requires that any document, such as the building code or fire code, referenced in an administrative rule be available to the public. HB1495 establishes a Purple Heart Trail along Route 3, from Massachusetts to Canada, offering more opportunities to honor our veterans. HB1622 exempts the Insurance Department from following the style and formatting requirements of administrative rules, since they are based on national models.

HB1644 separates the regulation of individual home health care providers from that of firms, lessening the requirements for individuals. Finally, SB230 establishes that for pension purposes, overtime and extra pay in the last years cannot exceed the average over one’s career.

Interested readers can email me for my newsletter, with more details than I can fit in a letter.

Mrs. Paula Stroberg, Case Manager

Paula teaches Special Education classes in the fifth and eighth grades. She holds Master Degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education, with an undergraduate degree in Psychology. As a Case Manager, she is in charge of the students identified as needing special education in grades 5 and 8, collaborates with teachers and specialists for those students, and works closely with the paraprofessionals.

Paula worked for five years as a paraprofessional in Northwood, two years as a Case Manager in Chichester, and has been a Case Manager in Epsom for five years. When asked her favorite aspect of teaching, she said, with a smile, "Kids. They’re the only reason I’m here." She looks forward to meeting the new classes arriving each year.

Paula wants all parents to know that all their support is very important to the growth and development of their children. "We all need to work together." Another staff member described Paula as "going above and beyond to collaborate with other teachers."

Paula’s son, 19, has just finished his freshman year at Johnson & Wales University, majoring in Culinary Arts. Her daughter, 17, will be a senior at Coe Brown Academy next year. Paula’s favorite leisure activity is spending time with her family.

Vote For Michele’s Totally Awesome Gourmet Popcorn

We at Michele’s Totally Awesome Gourmet Popcorn are trying to qualify for a grant to grow our business and we need your support right now. Chase and Living Social will be awarding up to 12 companies throughout the United States with a grant of up to $250,000 this September in what they are calling Mission: Small Business™.

We registered our business and began the challenge. The first part was to answer a number of essay questions about the who, what, where, why, and how of our gourmet popcorn business. The second part is getting support from all of you in the form of 250 votes by June 30th in order to move to the next step: the "decision committee."

We are so close to reaching this goal and would truly appreciate a vote from you today. It only takes a facebook page and a minute or two, that’s all.

This money would certainly help Michele’s expand which ultimately will help to energize our local economy. Thank you.
