Arsenic In Your Drinking Water
What It Does, What You Should Know And What
You Can Do About It
In New Hampshire, 1 in 5 private water wells
have high levels of arsenic that exceed State and Federal health
limits. Most of this is due to the state’s bedrock geology which
contains certain formations containing high levels of naturally
occurring arsenic. NH at one time had 300 arsenic mines to produce
arsenic for a variety of commercial products and was known as the
“arsenic state.”
If you live in Epsom, the likelihood that
there are elevated levels of arsenic in your artesian well water is
closer to 1 in 4. Arsenic in drinking water, even at very low
levels, is a dangerous substance associated with higher risks of
cancer, infertility and other medical conditions. It may not
immediately make you feel sick but can have serious health
consequences over time. Arsenic is odorless and tasteless, and it
can be detected only in a laboratory. It can be removed from your
well water using under the sink and “whole house” treatment
technology.
Experts from the NH Department of
Environmental Services, Drinking Water & Groundwater Bureau, and
from the Center for Environmental Health Sciences at Dartmouth
Medical School, will share with you the latest information on this
important health hazard and what you can do about it.
Come learn what you can do to protect your
family.

Epsom Central School Staff And Faculty
Mrs. Linda Valley, 2nd grade teacher
To visit Linda’s classroom is to meet a woman
with a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, a passion about
teaching, and affection for her teammates. She has a Bachelor’s
Degree in Elementary Education with a Certificate in Special Ed and
a minor in Spanish, as well as an Associate’s Degree in General
Studies, all at Keene State College. Linda has been at ECS for 22
years and has taught 1st and 6th grades, Special Ed in grades K-3,
and a total of 13 years including the last 11 in 2nd grade. She also
served as a case manager in Grades 1-5 for a year. In the past, she
has worked on the Student Council, Yearbook Committee, Ski Club, and
Environmental Club.
Linda loves the excitement kids have about
being in school and believes that, if the faculty and staff make
school a fun place, the kids will love learning even more. With
regard to her team of two other 2nd grade teachers, Linda says,
“It’s not what you do but with whom you work that counts. My team
works well together, each of us having her own strengths and
believing that learning is a life-long process.” Linda appreciates
when parents work with their children at home, listen to them read,
and help them practice their math facts. “It will make them excited
to learn. If their homework does seem like a chore, parents should
talk to me. That’s not what homework is all about,” she says.
Linda lives in Pembroke with David, her
husband of 21 years, and a daughter; an older stepson lives on his
own. A self-proclaimed “military brat,” she loves to be outdoors and
camping or fishing with her family.
