It’s All Relative

New Exhibit At The Epsom Public Library

The Epsom Public Library is pleased to present the work of former local teacher, JoAnn Portalupi, in an exhibit entitled “It’s All Relative.”

A family album tells the story of people who have come before and the moments deemed important enough to record. Working from old family photos, the artist traces a path back through her childhood and into the family history of her Italian immigrant ancestors.

JoAnn Portalupi was a teacher, beginning her career at the elementary school in Epsom before she became a painter.  Today, when she is not outdoors painting the landscape, she works out of her home studio in Lee, New Hampshire.

The exhibit runs from September 27 to November 15 and may be viewed during regular library hours:  Monday-Thursday, 10 am to 7 pm, and Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm.  The public is cordially invited to attend a reception for the artist on Sunday, October 26, from 4 to 6 pm.  For more information, call the library at 736-9920 or visit www.epsomlibrary.com.

Epsom Food Pantry

Another week has slipped by and here I am again with our weekly update.

Our membership has increased, so our needs over the next few months will definitely accelerate.

I recently heard from the Capital Region Food Pantry and they will be voting on accepting us into their program which will give us another great source of food. This is the agency that we get our Christmas baskets from. I will let you know next week if we are accepted.

My egg donations have dropped dreadfully. Are the ladies not laying eggs at this time? Somebody update me on this subject and if you are shopping, maybe buy a dozen for the Pantry.  This week Sarah Harkness and I will be starting a scrapbook on the Pantry so long after I am gone there will be a legend of how we started, and all the wonderful people that have made it happen.

Until next time,

Priscilla

Epsom Graduate Awarded 2014 Cumberland Farms Believe and Achieve Scholarship

Convenience Store Retailer Has Helped Over 900 Students Reach their Dreams since Program Inception.

Cumberland Farms announced today that 130 talented high school seniors from 11 states have been awarded Believe and Achieve Scholarships to help them attend college in the fall of 2014. Among the winners is one talented high school senior from Epsom. The 2014 local award winner and her college of choice is: Allana Kroll, Gordon College. Cumberland Farms’ popular scholarship program began eight years ago and has already provided over 900 college-bound young adults with critical financial assistance to help them realize their dreams of achieving a college education.

As part of the company’s commitment to nurturing the future of young people, the program provides $1,000 scholarships to eligible graduating high school seniors across its service area. This year Cumberland Farms has awarded $130,000 in Believe and Achieve Scholarships to 28 students in Massachusetts, 14 in Florida, 19 in New York, 10 in New Hampshire, 24 in New Jersey, 8 in Connecticut, 6 in Maine, 7 each in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, 6 in Vermont and 1 in Maryland.

Thanks to the assistance provided by these scholarships, past recipients have attended a wide cross-section of institutions including Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Purdue, University of Massachusetts, Clemson, Florida State, University of Michigan, Princeton, University of Florida, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York University, University of Miami and more.

“We started the Believe and Achieve Scholarship Program to help young adults succeed, so we couldn’t be more proud of the difference we are making in their lives,” said Ari Haseotes, CEO of the Cumberland Gulf Group of Companies. “Over the past eight years we have helped more than 900 students from the communities we serve attend college, and gain the skills and knowledge they need to excel in the future.”

The program is open to students entering a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school in the fall of 2014 who live within 30 miles of any Cumberland Farms store. Scholarships were awarded based on a student’s academic performance, as well as the student’s financial need. The application process for next year’s scholarship program will open in October, 2014.

Since formalizing its Corporate Giving Program eight years ago, Cumberland Farms has donated millions of dollars in cash and products to causes that directly benefit thousands of young people through scholarships, direct-to-school programs, youth sports, local fundraising and more.

Letter To The Editor

Continue Democrat House Majority

Most of us remember the loud devisive legislative sessions in Concord 2011 and 2012. Speaker Bill O’Brien, my political opponent Carol McGuire and other so-called Free Staters slashed “community” in favor of hyper-individualism. New Hampshire’s roads and bridges deteriorated, education suffered, they chose Washington bureaucracy to administer New Hampshire’s Affordable Care Act rather than trusting ourselves. Bill O’Brien announced last week that if Republicans take control of the Legislature Nov 4th, he once again wants the Speakership.

2013 and 2014 Legislative sessions were civil. We saw bipartisan agreement on State Budget which restored previous cuts to education, mental health services; bipartisan funding of roads and bridges (so badly needed), bipartisan Medicaid Expansion insuring 50,000 previously uninsured Granite Staters. I favor both Medicaid Expansion and the Affordable Care Act, reasons for which I will hopefully address in another letter.

If elected to represent District 29 (Allenstown/Epsom/Pittsfield), my priorities will be our communities, public education, reproductive rights, working families. I am a proud Democrat who believes in the values I have benefited from; I still believe in America, in New Hampshire and in our communities.

All indications are that most races are too close to call. Please commit to vote Nov 4. Vote for community. Vote Democrat.

Epsom Fire Cited For Service

The crew of Epsom Fire Engine 2 were honored by the New Hampshire Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services Committee of Merit at a ceremony held at the Concord Audi on Monday evening, September 29th.

A Unit Citation was awarded to the crew for action they encountered on July 17, 2013. Responding to a call of a structure fire the crew learned that victims were trapped on the second floor. Firefighters Bassett and Bilodeau of Engine 2 placed a ladder and rescued a female victim as flames were blowing overhead. They were also able to assist a male victim escape and receive medical care as he appeared to have suffered burns.

A Unit Citation is awarded to all members of a fire company or group, operating together, who perform meritorious service at the scene of an emergency incident.

The Committee of Merit Awards program was started in 1987 to recognize outstanding acts of heroism, courage, and performance beyond the call of duty. In the fall of 2005 a cooperative event was initiated to honor those of the NH Emergency Medical Service for acts of heroism and those who demonstrate exemplary service and accomplishments.

The New Hampshire Fire Standards and Training and EMS Commission administers the program through the NH Fire Academy.
