As part of the library’s Adult Programming, Saving Mr. Banks, the
story of how the movie Mary Poppins came about, will be shown at the
Epsom Library on Wednesday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m. Emma Thompson,
Tom Hanks, and Paul Giamatti star in the film.
Rob Slaven, a movie critic for Amazon, says that “Saving Mr. Banks
is a dual narrative portrait of the author of Mary Poppins and the
creative team at Walt Disney that worked to bring it to the big
screen. In one thread (l961) we have the curmudgeonly author
behaving like a stark raving . . .well, curmudgeon, as she tries to
exert control over the creative process. In other thread, (1906,
Australia) we unwind the story of her grim childhood that makes her
a curmudgeon in first place.”
Popcorn and soft drinks will be served.

Letter To The Editor
The frost is 3-5 feet deep in the roads. For the sake of the paved
roads I hope it doesn’t get too hot too soon, but as far as for me,
I’m ready. A reminder, please drive on the high areas on your road
to flatten it out and we’ll save each other misery.
I have a question you may know the answer to… If you go to a gas
station with a gas can and push 93 octane and you put 2 ½ gallons in
the can, did you get any 93 octane and if you did, how much?
Knowing that the traffic circle’s original purpose was for the
continuous flow of traffic, I’ve often wondered why some people work
so hard to make sure others don’t get in front or in back of them?
Spring is coming!

Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,
This week, the House was met to vote on all remaining House bills.
HB1372 funded training pediatric sexual assault nurse examiners.
This bill was very confused in that the urgent need cited was for
physicians, but the training that would be provided was for nurses.
In addition, this program has a grant starting in September, so the
need to pay Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s IT costs immediately (as the bill
does) doesn’t make sense. After some debate, with the opponents
pointing out that the money was not well focused on the actual
problems, the bill passed, 188-119.
HB1602, telling the Public Utilities Commission to decide if PSNH
should divest its remaining power generating facilities, was debated
both on whether we should force the divestiture, and if we should
delegate that decision. I’m not sure about the divestiture, but I
strongly feel that if we are to force that significant an action, it
should be done by the legislature. Let the PUC make a recommendation
and present their analysis, but ordering divestiture is too much to
require them to do. The bill finally passed, 185-134.
HB2014, the ten year plan for transportation improvements, was
explained more than debated and passed on a voice vote. It is heavy
on repair and maintenance rather than construction, addressing the
100 worst red list bridges. The construction items include replacing
the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge in Portsmouth; widening the next
segment of I93; and widening Rte 101 in Bedford for the two miles
that have the worst accident record in the state. HB2014 does
include an allocation for the increased funds from an increase in
the gas tax, contingent on that tax increase being approved.

“Ring Of Fire”
Submitted By Nancy Heath
The Epsom Historical Association held its Spring Meeting and Musical
Revue at the Epsom Public Library Sunday March 23, 2014. We had a
full house in attendance.
This year, the Musical Revue theme was from the 50s and 60s. Betsy
Bosiak narrated and the following local talent performed:
Self-accompanied soloists were: Bruce Graham (banjos) and Paul
Morencey (guitar); Nancy Yeaton on the keyboard accompanied soloists
Barbara Harkness, Joyce Heck, and Vicki Watson. Dick Frambach and
his harmonica joined Bruce in a few songs and engaged the audience
as we all participated in a 50s and 60s sing-along (Mitch Miller
style). Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was probably the easiest to
sing along, thus the loudest!
Few things are more heartwarming fun than an informal “walk down
memory lane” with our neighbors. George and Jean Foster were there,
an impromptu “Happy Birthday” was sung to Jean (she did not tell us
how old she is). President Carole Brown wishes to thank all in
attendance, the performers and those who brought goodies for the
mingling afterward.
The next Epsom Historical Association event is to be an ice cream
social and will be held this coming summer. For anyone who is
interested in joining the Epsom Historical Association, dues are
only $15.00 per year for the whole family. I will follow up later
with more info re the association.
