The Davis Fuels Story
By
Meggin Dail
The Davis family, Stacy, Rick, Nathan, Cody
Started in 1997 by Paul
and Carolyn Davis of Epsom, NH, the name “Davis Fuels of Epsom” has
become synonymous with great customer service. After working for
Agway for several years Paul decided it was time to start his own
company, a company that was by the little guy for the little guy. He
had no idea at the time how that customer base would grow. Don’t let
the name fool you, just because it includes the words “of Epsom”
Davis Fuels goes out of their way to serve a 20 mile radius of their
own home town.
The Davis “boys”;
Andy and Rick have worked for Paul over the years. The Davis
brothers number four but many customers believe Joel Dail, who has
worked for the company almost as long as Rick has, to be one of the
Davis boys as well, which doesn’t bother him in the least.
Six years ago when
it came time for Paul and Carolyn Davis to enjoy their retirement,
Rick Davis, owner of 5 D’s Heating at the time while still working
for his dad, took over the family business and kept up the tradition
encouraging two of his sons, Nathan and Cody to join. The transition
was an easy one since Rick’s wife, Stacy, who was no stranger to
family business since her family owned Hudson’s Fireside Restaurant
in Northwood, had begun manning the office already. Again, they kept
it all in the family.
When any business
changes hands there are always things the successor wants to do
differently. In this case Rick’s experience in furnace installation,
repair and maintenance was a big bonus to the company. He added 24
hour emergency service and two years ago to keep up with supply and
demand, he added a propane truck to the fleet, making Davis Fuels of
Epsom a full-service company.
“It’s what keeps us the
‘down home’ business with a personality. Everybody knows us and
we’re all friends. When you call Davis Fuels, we don’t ask your
account number, we know your name.” Davis Fuels and their customers
are so close that when it came time for Rick to do his Christmas
shopping last year, a few of his customers helped him out and Stacy
was thrilled. “He is sometimes on the road so late because everyone
wants to talk to him and sometimes they’ve even been known to feed
him a meatloaf dinner.”
After many years together
already, Rick and Stacy decided to tie the knot in 2014. Again,
another easy transition, the two were made for each other and had a
big family country wedding in their own backyard.
When I asked what makes
Davis Fuels of Epsom so different from the other companies out
there, Stacy replied, “the girl in the office.” Stacy is “the girl
in the office.”
“But seriously,” she
says, “ when people know they’re talking to me, the same person they
talked to yesterday, last month or the year before, it’s comforting
that I know the history of the account, you don’t need to be handed
off to some other representative. It’s part of the great customer
service we provide.” That and they make every effort, even in the
worst snowstorms, to deliver the first time.
“Last winter was rough, I
always encourage people whether on the phone or via Facebook to
clear their fills. We know it can be hard enough to get out of your
own driveway without trying to remember to snow blow or shovel a
path for the oil guy, but Joel and Rick sure appreciate that path
when you do. At one stop after a particularly bad storm Rick
actually had to jump over a snow bank and practically swim through
the snow to the fill, sliding on his stomach to get there.” More
than likely though, customers care about the well being of the Davis
Fuels family as much as Davis Fuels cares about them.” While Stacy
will remind you to continue to clear the fills for her drivers she
also reminds you that, “You can keep the cookies and cocoa coming
but just remember, most of the pumpkin bread and candy never
actually make it back to the office to me, it’s eaten before they
even get back!” Isn’t that just like family?
