Evergreen Lodge #53, Ivy Green Lodge #36 and friends are offering digital photos with Santa on Saturday, December 5th  at the Epsom Public Library from 10:30 am to 1 pm. There will be crafts for the children, cookie decorating, refreshments and a Christmas tree raffle. 100% of proceeds go to local Holiday Outreach.  Plan to join the fun and help with local holiday outreach!

Epsom Historical Association

 

Everyone is invited to attend the annual Holiday Social of the Epsom Historical Association on Sunday, December 6th, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Epsom Public Library. Updated information about recent publications and membership will be available. There will be a raffle drawing, music, and refreshments. For more information, please call 736-4477.

 


 

Santa’s Workshop is coming to the Epsom Central School on Saturday, December 12 from noon to 4. We will have our great theme raffle baskets (including an awesome surprise one donated by the PTO), the lottery tree raffle, free crafts for the kids to make and take, local artisans and chefs offering inexpensive gift items for children (and adults) to buy for their friends and family, Christmas and holiday music, cookie decorating, and lunch and drinks to purchase (hot dogs, chips, chili, hot cocoa bar, coffee). Admission is one canned good (no glass or perishables) per person which will be donated to the Epsom Food Pantry. There is a need for tuna and canned meat, but all donations are welcome and appreciated!

 

If you are a crafter or cook we are offering a limited number of vendor tables. Each spot is only $5 and you keep all the profits. Please call Susan Pagano at 603-229-2510 if you’d like to reserve a table.

 


 

Epsom Central School To Host Scholastic Book Fair Event December 8th To December 12th

 

What: The Epsom Central School PTO will host a Scholastic Book Fair from 12/8/15 to 12/11/15 during school hours. Funds raised will help purchase books for classrooms, the library, and students. Families, faculty, and the community are invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become lifelong readers.

 

The Book Fair will feature a special Family Event during Santa’s Workshop on Saturday, December 12with crafts, raffles, and other great activities for kids and families. This is from noon to 4.

 

When: The Book Fair will be open daily from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, 12/8 to 12/12.

 

Where: Epsom Central School, 282 Black Hall Road

 

More: The Book Fair offers specially priced books and educational products, including popular series, award-winning titles, new releases, adult bestsellers, and other great reads from more than 100 publishers.

 

Book Fair customers may help the school build classroom libraries by purchasing books through the Classroom Wish List program. In addition, the Book Fair will feature the All for Books™ program, where kids can share the thrill of reading by donating loose change to purchase books from the Book Fair for help fellow classmates enjoy a special book they otherwise wouldn’t.. Scholastic matches monetary donations with a donation of up to one million books, which go to national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping families in need, such as the Kids in Distressed Situations and Kids In Need Foundation.

Obituaries


 

Eli “Bill” Newell

 

Epsom – Mr. Eli “Bill” Newell (SSgt, US Army, Retired), 80, of New Orchard Road, died Thursday, November 19, 2015.

 

Born in Brentwood on April 25, 1935, Bill was the son of Albert and Leone (Herrick) Newell. After 22 years of service and duty during both the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam war,  he retired from the US Army as a Staff Sergeant.  He was a member of the Maple-Wheadon VFW Post # 4479 of Raymond.

 

After his discharge as a master electrician, Mr. Newell worked for several companies, including Cote Electric, LeBlanc Electric, and Longchamps.

 

Bill is survived by 3 children, Timothy Newell of East Hampstead, April Young of Port Wentworth, GA, and Curtis Newell of Litchfield; 4 grandchildren; his sister, Irene Mandigo of Deerfield; brother, Royal Newell of Montana; and nieces and nephews.

 

He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Albert and Mervin.

 

Graveside services with military honors were held Wednesday, November 25th at the New Pine Grove Cemetery in Raymond.

Olive Ames Edmunds

 

Epsom - Mrs. Olive Ames Edmunds passed away at Epsom Health Care Center on November 19, 2015 at the age of 103.  Born in Laconia in 1912, she lived in Pittsfield and Rochester until her marriage to E. Scott Edmunds in 1938.  They lived 60 years in the home they built in Chichester.

 

Olive graduated from Pittsfield High School and Keene State College and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse.  She also taught school in Loudon and at Rundlett Junior High in Concord.

 

Olive was instrumental in organizing a hot lunch program for the four one-room schoolhouses in Chichester.  She was chairperson of the Chichester school board when the Chichester Central School was built, served on the town’s Planning Board, Trustee of the Trust Funds, was active in the Ladies Benevolent Society of the Congregational Church, and was a member of the Chichester Grange for over 70 years.

 

She and Scott spent many years and miles camping in their trailer, driving across the U.S. and Canada.  They also toured Europe since, as she said, “Both of our daughters have been there. I guess we should see it, too.”

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Scott Edmunds; her parents, Ida and Thurlow Ames; her brother, Irving Ames; sister, Esther Marsh; and grandson, Matthew Sawyer.

 

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Linda Sawyer and Bob of Epsom; Eileen Owen and John of Winthrop, WA; grandson, Jason Sawyer and Melissa of Somerville, MA; great grandson, Matthew; and niece, Marjorie Carpenter of Concord; as well as  grand nieces and nephews; and former students who remember her fondly.

 

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Edmunds-Stanyan Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Chichester Town Library.  The family thanks the staff at Epsom Health Care Center for their thoughtful care of Olive.

Matthew McWain Hodgins Jr.

 

Matthew McWain Hodgins Jr., 48, of Black Hall Road, died October 8th at the Concord Hospice House following a courageous  battle with cancer.

 

He was born in Concord the son of US Navy Cmdr. Matthew M Hodgins Sr. and Marcia J  (Stockman) Hodgins. He grew up in Pittsfield and was a graduate of Pittsfield Middle High School in 1985 and Keene State College in 1989. He also was a graduate of the Divers Academy of the Eastern Seaboard and also the NH Police Training Council and worked as a NH State Corrections Officer. He was an accomplished under water gold miner. He was employed as a commercial diver and lastly by the Exel Co. in Bow as an inventory control specialist.

 

He is survived by his mother, Marcia Stockman of Epsom, a brother, Andrew Hodgins of Kingfield, ME, a sister, Victoria Best and her husband David of Rochester, NH, a niece, Penelope Hodgins, a nephew, Simon Best, three aunts, Carol Bartlett, Sara Laro, and Ardra Cate, several cousins and a great uncle, Brian Hatch and wife Elaine of Canterbury. He was predeceased by his father and his sister-in-law (Andrew’s wife) Samantha Wright.

 

There are no visiting hours. A Memorial Burial at Sea will be scheduled at the family’s convenience.
