Public Information Regarding Webster Park

As you may know, many of the trees at Webster Park suffered heavy damage during a September “micro-burst” which brought down scores of trees in a matter of minutes and damaged even more.

Since the day of the event the park has been secured and areas of highest concern are marked to restrict access.  The Board of Selectmen thanks Gary Perry for this work making the park safe and useable for family and social events for the rest of the season.

As we look to the longer term safety of residents and visitors and the health of the woods that add to the character of Webster Park, the Board of Selectmen have consulted with Town and State Foresters to determine both a short term and longer term solution for the park.   Their professional assessments state the damage caused by the micro-burst was heightened by the less than robust health of the trees prior to the weather event.

Their recommendations were consistent; that the Town considers a long term plan for safety which will involve the immediate removal of identified trees that have suffered damage, evidence distress or have been compromised in other ways coupled with a replanting and restoration program that will include a mix of tree species that will serve the town well for many years.   They also include a strong recommendation for a longer term forest management program that will help to preserve the park as a safe and beautiful site for years to come.

In the weeks and months ahead there will be major logging operations going-on that will limit public access to parts of Webster Park during those periods.   If you would like more information regarding the Webster Park safety and restoration project, please contact Gary Perry or Town Office.

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield, I’ve been hearing a lot of angst and disappointment with various candidates in this election, so I have a suggestion for everyone. Go to the polls on election day (Tuesday, November 8) and start voting at the bottom of the ballot! Your votes for county attorney, sheriff, and state representative are likely to have a greater effect on your life than for president, and your vote counts more. I’ve seen so many ballots where someone starts at the top and loses interest halfway down – they’re wasting their votes for the local officials, where they have the most impact. If you start at the bottom, you’re likely to get further before becoming disgusted or frustrated.

Personally, I hope you keep voting up to the governor’s line – a Republican governor will improve our results in Concord, even if only because he won’t veto common sense legislation (right to work, constitutional carry, even the state budget) as the Democrat governors have. I also hope that he will appoint commissioners who will be more transparent and more effective.

I’m asking for your vote as state representative in Merrimack District 29 (just above the county offices!) If re-elected, I will continue to keep you informed of what I do in Concord, and why I vote the way I do. I’m always available to hear your concerns with the state government, or submit legislation when needed.

Letter To The Editor

Candidate Hal Rafter’s take down of the “American’s for Prosperity” pledge in the 10/19 issue of the SVS was spot on.  He clearly explains the fallacy of blind, anti-tax claptrap and refuses to bow down to the billionaire Koch brothers.

Alas, Mr. Rafter is not running in my district where for years “free staters” (outside agents sent here to subvert our state government) have reigned.  Naturally, my so-called representatives have achieved a perfect score on this pledge from their sponsors.  Indeed, the only visible accomplishment during their tenure has been converting a welcoming, scenic rest area on Route 4 into a dilapidated eyesore.

But don’t despair, there is hope.  On November 8th, we can restore local control, and with it community pride, by electing a fine slate of home grown candidates.  These include Mary Frambach - a lifelong resident with deep roots in Epsom, Denis Beaudoin – a near life time resident of Pittsfield and defender of worker’s rights and David Coolidge – a small business owner for decades from Allenstown.  Three distinguished candidates, one from each town, ready and able to represent the people of their district.

Thank you,

Glenn Horner

Letter To The Editor

Kelley Ayotte voted to make it illegal for Americans to buy prescription drugs from Canada which are much less expensive than in US. I take that personally as an offensive act. The Republican Party has sought to delegitimize our twice elected President Obama while thwarting every effort for productive change. John McCain has promised a Republican Senate will not confirm any Supreme Court nominees put forth by a President Hillary Clinton. Many of us constantly receive emails from Alt Right factions with no sources, no basis in fact. The Republican Party does not even know what it is anymore.

Do you want to give Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices as the VA does? Fair taxation? A Medicare public option? Strengthened Social Security? Modernized infrastructure? Debt free college for middle class students? Continuance of Planned Parenthood? National security based in reason rather than vagaries? Freedom from anarchy of “Free Staters”?

Vote for Democrats!

Nancy Heath

Thank You

We would like to thank all the people who donated to The American Cancer Society and The Dempsey Challenge.

Our flock of flamingos left on lawns were very successful!  We would also like to thank those who donated on Facebook, those who came to our vendor bingo fundraiser, as well as our vendors, and those who donated to our silent auction.  We appreciated your donations so much!

Our team of 25 walkers raised over $3,000 this year for the Making Strides Cancer Walk in Concord.  We were also able to donate just under $1,000 for The Dempsey Challenge which was also in October this year!

We would especially like to thank our families and friends for all their love and support and the effort they put into their fundraising.  We do this so a cure can be found for our children and grandchildren as well as yours, soon!  We hope research finds a breakthrough and no one ever has to hear a diagnosis of cancer again.

Shannon Stevens
