movie is rated PG. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
“Gifted” is the movie
matinee scheduled for Wednesday, January 9 at 1:30. It stars Chris
Evans as a single man dedicated to raising his gifted young niece,
who is a child prodigy. Their life together is threatened when the
girl’s overbearing grandmother, his mother, has other plans for the
girl which leads to a custody battle. How do you create an
ordinary life for an extraordinary girl?

Kindergarten is a Waste of Taxpayer Money
As evidenced by a recent
posting in The Sun, at least one proponent of FULL day Kindergarten
in Epsom has lost her mind in writing a letter as if it had been
dictated by her three-year-old daughter. What silly, sentimental
garbage is this? Mommy pretending to speak for her little one is
over the top!
Madam,… having a child
was YOUR choice, and moving to Epsom without considering YOUR wants
and perceived needs was also YOUR choice. Kindergarten with its
finger painting, crayon drawing, and storytelling amounts to nothing
more than a babysitting service for young families. A small child’s
life is certainly NOT going to be ruined without Kindergarten, nor
is their intelligence or learning ability going to suffer and affect
their later adult lives.
Why is it that people
persist in moving to New Hampshire and to our town of Epsom, and
then expect or demand that they receive the same services and
benefits provided them wherever it was that they moved from? Schools
and town services are paid for by TAXATION. Why should Epsom
residents (most of whom do NOT have small children in school) pay to
babysit the children of others?
Taxation for most all of
us is a necessary evil that’s grudgingly tolerated… but it always
hurts! Let’s apply some COMMON SENSE here, and not make things
financially worse because it’s the “Feel-Good cause du jour.”

I’m a resident of Epsom
and a father of two young children. To state clearly and right
up front, I am a strong supporter and advocate for full-day
kindergarten in Epsom and I urge you all to come out and vote in
March.
To address some recent
arguments:
- For those that say, “I
never went to full-day kindergarten, or my children never went to
full-day kindergarten, and we/they turned out fine,” they’re
probably right and that argument may have held up 20+ or even 10
years ago, but the world has changed. Getting accepted to
colleges and finding good paying jobs is harder now than it ever was
and this trend will only continue over the next 20 years as our
children grow to enter the workforce. Today, children are
being exposed to foreign languages and complex math and science
topics through STEM programs at an earlier age than previous
generations ever were expected to do. There is so much more expected
of children now, and we need to prepare them for it.
- For those that say,
“It’s not fair that I don’t have children but I’m still expected to
pay taxes to cover the additional cost of FDK,” it’s no different
than paying taxes for any other municipal service that the town of
Epsom offers. It’s an investment in improving the lives of the
residents of our community. This argument would be analogous to me
stating that my taxes shouldn’t be used for road maintenance on
roads I don’t drive on, or to pay the salaries of our public
servants since I’ve never had to rely on their services. These
are absurd arguments to make, just as absurd as those folks
unwilling to contribute to the investment in a full-day kindergarten
program.

All in all 2018 was a
good year. Due to the weather, we have some paving and culvert
installation not completed. Looking forward to a great year in 2019.
I don’t know if you know
it or not, but there are townspeople walking our roads picking up
trash, tons of trash, thrown out by others. I want to thank all of
you in advance for not throwing any more trash out of your vehicle
and all of you who pick up that trash. A statistical
observation: we can’t expect the world to be cleaned up until
we can at home.
I want to thank all of
you who helped out this last year. Your help is appreciated
both in dollars and time saved.

Obituaries
Ronald E. Miaskiewicz
EPSOM- Ronald E. Miaskiewicz, 74, of Epsom, passed away
peacefully surrounded by his family in the care of the Concord
Hospice House on December 19, 2018.
Born in Salem, MA, Ron
was the son of the late Edmund and Lucille (Pelletier) Miaskiewicz.
He was raised and educated in Salem, MA before moving to Salem, NH,
where he raised his family. He resided in Florida for a time
before returning to New Hampshire.
Prior to his retirement,
Ron was employed as a District Manager for Friendly’s, covering
Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. He was
later promoted to Regional Training Manager.
Always thinking of others
before himself, Ron was very involved with the Easter Seals and had
a special gift of working with disabled children.
He was a faithful and
active member of Grace Capital Church in Pembroke, where he also
belonged to the Men’s Group. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed
fishing, gardening and birdwatching.
He is survived by his
beloved wife of 50 years, Donna (Kelley) Miaskiewicz. He was
the loving father to Ronald Miaskiewicz, Jr. and his wife Lori of
Tega Cay, SC, Lori Batts and her husband Mark of Hooksett, Jenna
Mannino and her husband Peter of Indialantic, FL and Erik
Miaskiewicz and his wife Jessica of Manchester. He was the
grandfather to Connor and Bryce Miaskiewicz, Kasie, Nicholas and
Tyler Serafin, Ryan and Caitlin Batts, Noah and Jaden Mannino and
Becca, Fred, Robert and Henry Miaskiewicz. He also leaves his
sister, Joan Quinlan of Peabody, MA and his brother, Frank
Miaskiewicz of Georgetown, MA.
Relatives and friends are
invited to attend A Celebration of Ron’s Life which will be held on
Saturday, January 5th at 10 A.M. in the Grace Capital Church, 542
Pembroke St. in Pembroke. Those desiring to send flowers are
kindly asked to omit lilies due to allergies. For those
desiring in lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be sent

Robert F. Lucas
EPSOM – Robert F. Lucas,
70, of Epsom, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at his
residence surrounded by his family.
Born on May 13, 1948 in
Cambridge, he was the son of the late Robert R. and Marie (Mahoney)
Lucas.
Bob moved to New
Hampshire with his wife in 1975 and has resided in Epsom for the
last 43 years. He worked for many years as an Epsom Police Officer
in the 1980’s which was a job he loved and was very proud of.
Most recently he was employed by Market Basket as a meat cutter,
until his retirement. Bob enjoyed traveling to any body of water,
ocean or lake. As long as he was near the water and could collect
his rocks, he was happy.
He is survived by his
wife, Linda (DeFrancisco) Lucas with whom he shared 47 years of
marriage, his sons, Robert D. Lucas and his wife Alexis of
Barnstead, Jason Lucas of Penacook and Matthew Lucas and his wife
Pamela of Rollingsford; siblings, Donna Cushing of FL and Richard
Lucas of MA; grandchildren, Dominic, Mason, Braylon, Gage, Jarahmia,
Sam and Eli, nephews, Tom and John Cushing and niece, Jillian
Pelletier as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob’s wishes were to have
no services. The Still Oaks Funeral & Memorial Home in Epsom is
