We are blessed to share the wonderful opportunity
we have to give scholarships to those going on to higher education.
This year we were able to grant 6 $1,400.00 scholarships to: Laurel
Jansury, (Eckard College, Florida); Tim Porosky, (Salem State
College, N.H.); Lilium Richards, (Keene State College, N.H.); Grace
Sisti, (Simmons College, Ma.); Salvatore Sisti, (University of Maine
at Augusta); and Emily Wilson, (University of New Hampshire)! What a
joy!
We held an excellent Vacation Bible Camp and were
excited to have 34 children through grade 6! Another happiness was
the number of people and youth who helped out during the week! Each
day was a witness to God's provision and we thank everyone who made
the week such a joyful event. Blankets were made to help a mission
in Alaska for children in group homes. Donations offered each day
also enabled us to send money that will provide lunches for street
children in Laos.
On July 6 we were inspired and blessed to have
five people baptized in Lake Manning! We have received 8 new members
this year - great joy for all!!!
This coming Saturday, August 9 from 5 to 6:30
we invite you to another excellent Dinner at the Corner Church on
Route 107. The menu this month is "Surf & Turf" - something for
everyone! Steak, seafood kabobs, chowders, salad, rolls, butter and
our now FAMOUS DESSERT BAR! The price will be $10 for adults, $8 for
seniors (65 & over), $5 for 5-12 years (4 & under free), with a
maximum charge for an immediate family (parents and their
children) of $25.00. Call the church office at 364-7891 if you

Laconia Academy Offers Pre-Nursing Courses
Laconia Academy, the adult evening high school
diploma program, will be offering high school level Chemistry with a
Lab, Algebra I, Human Biology with a Lab and Algebra II/Geometry
courses beginning the week of August 25, 2008. These courses are
required pre-requisites for anyone desiring to enter a nursing
program.
In the Lakes Region area the interest and need is
very high for people wanting to enter the nursing/health care
profession, explained Mrs. Peggy Selig, Program Director. The
Laconia Adult Education Program will be offering the above required
pre-nursing courses during the Fall Semester 2008. The New Hampshire
State Nursing Program requires a High School level Chemistry with a
Lab, Algebra I, and Human Biology with a Lab as entrance level
courses for those people going into the nursing profession. Algebra
II/Geometry will also be offered. It is also recommended that future
nurses who have been out of high school for six years or more, take
a refresher course in these subjects. There is a shortage of nurses
in New Hampshire and these classes meet the entrance requirements
for people wishing to become an RN or LPN. These required courses
are also necessary for anyone desiring to become a Radiology
Technician or going into Dental Hygiene.
Laconia Academy will be offering these classes
over a fifteen week period. Algebra I, Algebra II/Geometry and Human
Biology & Lab will meet from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The Chemistry with a Lab
class will meet two nights per week from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Each class
is worth one high school credit.
Chemistry will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings starting on Tuesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 28.
Algebra I will be held on Wednesday, August 27; Algebra II/Geometry,
Wednesday, August 27; and Human Biology & Lab on Thursday evening,
August 28. All pre-nursing classes start the week of August 25-28,
2008. Pre-registration is required in all four classes. Anyone
interested in enrolling or obtaining more information should contact

Laconia Academy For The Fall Semester 2008
Laconia Academy is the adult evening high school
diploma program in the Lakes Region. "This program provides adults
with a "second chance" to earn a high school diploma," states Mrs.
Peggy Selig, Program Director.
Anyone interested in enrolling for the FALL
SEMESTER 2008 or learning more about the program is urged to call
524-5712 or stop into the Laconia Adult Education Office located in
Room #108 at Laconia High School.

Animal Planet Part II, American Government, Algebra II/Geometry,

Laconia Academy also enables In-School Youth,
enrolled in day high school programs, to take courses at night if
they have failed classes during the day. With the principal's
permission, any In-School Youth may enroll at Laconia Academy. This
cooperation with local area high schools helps prevent In-School
Youths from dropping out of high school or having to repeat their
senior year.
Students attending Laconia Academy can earn high
school diploma credits in several different ways. Credit is given
for previous high school credits earned and life experiences such as
military service, work experience, apprenticeship training,
correspondence courses, certificate programs and homemaking. Credits
are earned by passing courses at Laconia Academy. Laconia Academy is
also approved for those eligible for V.A. benefits.
One vital piece of paper needed at the time of
enrollment is a copy of one's high school transcript from the last
school attended. It is necessary in order to transfer those
previously earned high school credits to one's current record at
Laconia Academy.
Laconia Savings Bank has established limited
scholarship help for those students demonstrating financial need.
This scholarship help will enable students to return to school at
night and complete their high school education or earn a GED
Certificate. Laconia Savings Bank, in conjunction with their
Community Reinvestment (CRA) Plan is offering limited scholarship
help to residents living in the Bank's catchment areas of Laconia,
Gilford, Meredith, Center Harbor & Moultonborough with the Laconia
Academy Registration or Book Fees or GED Preparation Classes and
Exam Fees.
Statistics show that one out of four adults in
New Hampshire does not have a high school diploma. You are not
alone. 1,068 Lakes Region area adults have earned their high school
diploma through Laconia Academy. Everyone knows how important an
education is. Do this for yourself and your future. Go back to
school and earn a high school diploma. Call 524-5712 for an
appointment.
Old Home Day Church Service In Gilmanton's
Historic Smith Meeting House
Jane Cormier, Founder/Director of Lakes Region
Opera Company and Vocal Instructor at Brewster Academy, will be the
soloist for the Old Home Day church service at the Smith Meeting
House, August 10, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to
worship this summer at the historic Smith Meeting House. Smith
Meeting House is the site of the first church in Gilmanton, known as
the First Congregational Society in Gilmanton. The two and a half
story building, built before the Revolutionary war was taken down.
As the town population spread throughout the county a smaller church
was built in 1836. Maintained and repaired over the years, the
church now stands in complete restoration. Because of the
significance of both its parishioners and architecture, the church
has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the federal
government's Department of Interior.
Many of the town's founders worshiped in both of
these structures and are buried in the large private cemetery near
the church. There are familiar names like Page and Gale, also names
of Revolutionary war soldiers, and ancestors of those who moved
west. There is a Governor and a High Sheriff, and people of all
trades and occupations. A stroll through the cemetery road would
reveal some strange and humorous epitaphs.
Other buildings on the grounds include a
neo-Georgian school house, open horse sheds, a cook house, and a
funeral shed. If you lived in this area years ago, you not only grew
up and went to school here, you undoubtedly were compelled to go to
church, spent some time celebrating old home days, and found your
eternal resting place nearby.
The interior of the church is practically the
same as the original structure. The only changes include electrical
fixtures and brass oil chandeliers. The original pews were sold to
raise money for a new floor, and the new pews were made from one
huge pine tree, not far from the church. Despite periods of
depression and recession, the original organizers of the church
attempted to make the interior as pleasant as possible with its wood
stoves and a pump organ.
All services start at 4 p.m., unless otherwise
noted. The next service will be on August 10th at 4 p.m.
You are invited to attend, please bring friends and family. The
church located just off Rt. 140, within three miles from the centers
of the Gilmanton village and the Gilmanton Iron Works village.

"Old Home Day"
I sat upon
the old rock wall, with a smile upon my face
"Home
Coming" calls me home, to visit this old place.
Though
another year has passed, all is familiar to me,
Dad is
laughing with his friends, children on his knee.
Mom looks
up to wink at me. Her love is everywhere.
A neighbor
walks by to say, "That's quite a woman there".
A friend
came to shake my hand, a hug seemed much more right.
He was the
friend who stayed with me during a very painful night.
I wiped my
brow against my sleeve, after running the bases again
The Home
team was ahead, thanks to my hard- hitting friend.
The grills
are hot, and rumor is, the chicken and corn are done.
People
arrive with dishes galore for a barbeque in the sun.
When we
gave "Thanks" this morning at our little local church.
I knew I
would return again to the shade of this old Birch.
Come home
with me again next year my family and my friends.
Home is
where the heart is and friendships never end.
