Maurice
(Buz) Stearns and Nancy (Ross) Stearns
Married June 21, 1958
Buz and Nancy were married at the Ross home on Grove
Street in Littleton on a sunny Saturday afternoon in
1958. A small family gathering witnessed a special
union of two people who would stand the test of time
for half a century. Much like gold, the metal the
marriage of Nancy and Buz has been strong, beautiful
and resistant to corrosion.
The couple’s early years were spent in Littleton,
where Buz began what would be a 43 year career with
the NH Department of Transportation as a member of a
highway survey crew. Using her teaching degree,
Nancy began teaching elementary school in 1957 and
continued until Melissa was born in 1959. Three more
children would follow; Christine in 1962, Gordon in
1963, and Carrie in 1965. Those early years were
busy with 3 in diapers and budgeting for a family of
6 on one income. They bought a house on South Street
which would eventually host hundreds of kickball
games, and become the hangout for the neighborhood
children. (Kids seem to always know who bakes the
most.) Nancy and Buz were always willing to help
neighbors in need, teach skiing, fix bikes, and
volunteer on community boards….they taught by
example and were wonderful role models for their
children and many others.
In 1979 Buz and Nancy relocated to Laconia when Buz
was offered a job in at the Concord DOT and Nancy
continued her work with the State Department of
Employment Security. Education was a top priority
for Buz and Nancy which would be reflected in their
commitment to college for all 4 children. Buz
retired from the State in 1992 Nancy in 1994.They
now reside in Gilmanton where Nancy is active in
town government having served on the Conservation
Committee, Budget Committee and as Supervisor of the
checklist. Buz works for the Irwin Zone in Laconia
where he is still around cars, his other true love.
They are loving grandparents to Allegra, Connor,
Lauren, Gary, Leah and Tanner. This Golden
Anniversary signifies the strength of their marriage
and the special connection that they have shared
throughout the years. Happy anniversary dad and mom!
Another Great Year, Thanks To Many!
Gilmanton celebrated their 110th Old Home Day with a
beautiful, sunny day on Saturday, August 16h, 2008.
This event was a great success, thanks to the many
volunteers and contributors who put in countless
hours of their time to prepare for this special day.
We would like to thank the American Legion Post #102
for joining us again this year. Two fabulous
musicians, the Lakes Region Opera and Michael
Gallant, performed throughout the day. Everyone
appreciated their wonderful music, and we thank them
for joining us! We must also thank Larry Frates for
his entertaining magical show. Tiny Tails Miniature
Horses and Simply Alpacas provided children and
adults with a great opportunity to meet their
animals. It is not easy to transport these animals
back and forth, and we truly appreciate their effort
to attend Old Home Day.
Once again, our famous bean hole dinner was a great
success, and it could not be done without the many
volunteers who coordinated, served, and prepared the
dinner.
Residents of Gilmanton may not know that after many
years of hard work, Barbara Angevine is stepping
down from her position as President of the Old Home
Day Committee. We would like to thank Barbara for
her many years of service!
Preparation for Old Home Day begins several months
in advance, and the volunteers continue to do a lot
of work behind the scenes after the day ends.
Although we cannot mention everyone, we would like
give a warm and special thanks to the many
businesses that donated to the Meeting House
restoration by donating food, or funding their
advertisements, and to the many volunteers who
helped with setting up and cleaning the grounds
after the event.
Thanks to all of you, we can continue to fund our
goal of restoring the Smith Meeting House! It was
wonderful to see so many residents of Gilmanton come
together for another successful Old Home Day. Hope
to see you again next year!
