Gilmanton Parks And Recreation Department

The Gilmanton Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank the Gilmanton Highway Department for helping with the clean up at Crystal Lake Park from damage, which occurred during the December ice storm. A crew came in with chainsaws and wood chippers, and was a tremendous help. Again, thank-you!

The Gilmanton Brownie Troop built two recycle bins for the beach area and raised money for plants. During one of their meetings, they built, painted the bins and planted the plants around the fields and bathroom areas. Approximately 12 girls and their parents worked hard to help us get the park to look nice. They also helped us raise the flag, which will remain up until the closure of the park in October. Thank-you girls!

The construction company CCI will have their annual cookout this weekend and will be building two horseshoe pits as a donation to the town. Every year this company donates many hours to us constructing the bandstand, bridge, erecting the fiberglass flagpole, built many picnic tables and the building housing the bathrooms. Thank you Bill and Ryan Smith for planning these projects. Without you and the CCI group we would not have accomplished the many projects that have been completed over the years.

Swimming lessons will take place on a first come first serve basis with a limited amount of students. Classes will begin on July 6th and run until July 17th. Children will be placed in a level determined by the instructor on the first day of registration. Ages 5 to 12 will participate and certificates will be awarded at the end of the program. Contact Judi Williams at 267-5978.

Gilmanton Women’s Club Bake Sale

On July 4, the Gilmanton Women’s Club will hold its first of two fundraisers for the year. A bake sale will be held in front of the Temperance Tavern from 9-12 AM. Stop by for fresh baked pies, breads, cookies, and more. Donuts will again be fried as you watch. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a large food basket, hand made wall art, and a coffee basket.

The money raised at this bake sale will benefit Gilmanton’s organizations and townspeople. Only one other fundraiser will be held this year. If you miss us on July 4, we hope to see you at Old Home Days.

The Club’s next meeting will be July 6, 1:30 p.m.,  at the Shellcamp meeting house. All members are reminded to bring items for the food pantry.

Lower Gilmanton First Baptist Church - Summer Services

The First Baptist Church, the white church that overlooks Lower Gilmanton from the brow of the hill on Province Road, Route 107, is following with tradition by having a series of four summer services. Again this year the services will be on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM.

July 12th and August 2nd - Pastor Christopher Stevens of the Gilmanton Community Church will be sharing his gifts of faith.

July 26th - Reverend Alfred Page of Loudon, an active member of this church society, who is working to maintain this church building, built in 1842.

August 16th – Enjoy an evening of contemporary Christian music with Paul Dellaire and The Harvest Baptist Church Praise Band from Hooksett, NH.

Refreshments will follow the services at which time we may meet new people or find old friends.  Hope to see you at these Sunday evening services to keep this summer tradition alive.

Gilmanton Corner Public Library

Young mothers and dads, check out Summer Story Telling Time at Gilmanton Corner Public Library plus new books have arrived, July 4th Book Sale, and more July events.

Starting Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 3:30, summer story telling time will begin with Miss Terry at the Gilmanton Corner Public Library. Miss Terry is full of enthusiasm and she has a few surprises for those who come to hear her. Story telling time will be available on Wednesdays at 3:30 throughout July and August.

New books have arrived for summer reading. For our very young ones, we have Elephants Cannot Dance by Mo Willems and Alice The Fairy by David Shannon. Books for the young adults are Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Impulse by Ellen Hopkins and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Our adults can’t be left out so we bought Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult, Cemetery Dance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, First Family and Absolute Power by David Baldacci, Wicked Prey by John Sanford, Scarecrow by Michael Connelly, American Lion by Jon Meacham, and Scat by Carl Hiasson. You can locate all these books on our New Arrival shelves.

Moms and Dads, don’t forget those FREE museum passes we have as a benefit for being a member of our library. Library membership is free. Our three free museum passes are for SEE Science Center, Currier Art Museum and the New Hampshire Historical Society Museum. All museums are located within an hour’s drive from Gilmanton. The SEE Science Center also includes grandma and grandpa!!!!

The July library display is going to be our forever classics. Am sure some of them will be on your school reading list for the summer. This will be a good way to get a jump start on that list and get that book report written before school begins in the fall.

Come see our new storm door that was recently custom made and installed. As we have a wider door than usual, off the shelf doors would not fit. We were very fortunate and appreciative to a family in town who gave us the money for this much needed project. We can’t thank them enough. The new door is more in keeping with the historic architecture of the building and it will keep out many drafts this winter. Speaking of winter, remember that our Library is open all year but only on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Current summer and fall hours are Mondays, 2:00-8:00; Tuesdays, 2-4; Wednesdays, 2:00 -6:00; Thursdays, 2:00-8:00; and Fridays, 2-4 and Saturdays by chance when the flag is waving.

Our next book sale is Saturday, July 4 starting at 9:00 just before the big parade starts. Our continuing goal is for adjustable bookcases. We had one built last year and the next two will be built this summer with our book sales profits. Donations are always welcome and can be sent to Gilmanton Corner Public Library, PO Box 504, Gilmanton 03237.
