An English Captive: Story At Gilmanton Historical Society

The Gilmanton Historical Society opens its 2012 summer series on Tuesday, May 22nd at the Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works. The public is welcome and there is no charge. Social time and refreshments start at 7:00 pm and the program begins promptly at 7:30 pm.

In a dawn raid on August 20, 1754, Susannah Johnson and her family were captured by a group of Abenaki. Susannah Johnson was nine months pregnant at the time. The incident began an extraordinary journey that forced Susannah to navigate the cultural waters of three societies: English, Abenaki and French.

Marcia Schmidt Blaine, Associate Professor of History at Plymouth State University, brings us this amazing story. The program is sponsored by the NH Humanities Council.

The Society’s summer series is presented on the 4th Tuesday of each month, May through September. June brings us Jeff Warner with Family Fun in Folk Music; on July 24th Gilmanton’s own Doug Towle tells us about the Grand Hotels of the White Mountains; August 28th enjoy a visit from Rachel Revere, wife of the famous rider; and on September 25th we will learn about Gilmanton in the Civil War.

A special event on July 28th, 11am to 4pm is a Flax Demonstration and Agricultural Field Day, presented jointly by the Historical Society and the Gilmanton Land Trust, at a site on Meetinghouse Road. Gina Gerhard will demonstrate the many steps in the process of making flax into linen.

The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of the Town. They are available at all Society programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in Gilmanton Corners. The Society’s Museum, formerly in the Academy, will be moving to Old Town Hall. Look for an announcement of the grand opening.
