Fall Poker Run To Benefit Local Charities

Save the date: Sunday, October 7, 2012. We are the GWRRA New Hampshire Chapter G and we’re celebrating our 25th anniversary with our annual Poker Run to benefit local charities. This is a great time of the year to tour the countryside and enjoy the fall foliage along with fellow riders. All motorcyclists are welcome to join us for this day of fun and camaraderie. Past Poker Runs have included riders from throughout New England, Canada and points South, so invite your friends.

The ride starts with registration from 9-11 at Venco Wings, 815 Route 129, Loudon, NH. The cost is $10.00 for each participant. As in the past, the route will travel through the beautiful and scenic roads of the Lakes Region and a guide will be handed out at the time of registration for the first part of the ride.  There will be checkpoints along the way and a second guide with the final directions. The day will end with food, prizes and a chance to relax and catch up with “old” friends and perhaps make some new ones.

Speaking of “old” friends, we hope that former members will join us for this 25th Anniversary celebration. We’d love to hear from you and catch up on what you’ve been doing.

For more information about our Poker Run and Chapter G, please contact Ed Heath at [email protected] or (603) 393-5674.

GWRRA stands for Gold Wing Road Riders Association and our motto is “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge”.  All motorcyclists are encouraged to check out www.GWRRA.org for more information about GWRRA.

Lively Boys! Lively Boys!
The Origin Of Bad Boy Books At GYRL

Gilmanton Lively_boys_1.jpg

“Bad Boys” engage in a snowball fight on Slattery’s Hill.  J. Dennis Robinson presents a program about “The Origin of Bad Boy Books” Thursday, October 4, at 7 pm at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library.

Historian J. Dennis Robinson brings “The Origin of Bad Boy Books” to the Gilmanton Year-Round Library on Thursday evening, October 4, at 7 pm.  The Library is on NH Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works, opposite the Gilmanton School.

Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer (1876) and Huckleberry Finn (1884) represent the best of the “bad boy” genre in American Literature.  But the theory of “The Human Boy” that started it all was the brainchild of two Portsmouth, NH authors.

It all began with “Plaguey Ike Partington” (1850s) by B.P. Shillaber and “A Story of a Bad Boy” (1869) by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Mr. Robinson tracks the NH origins of the genre that gave us Denis the Menace and Bart Simpson.

A teacher, columnist and videographer, Robinson edits SeacoastNH.com a website about NH history and culture. He has published more than 1,000 articles on New Hampshire history and culture and seven books including histories of Strawberry Banke Museum and the grand hotel, Wentworth by the Sea.

The presentation is supported by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and everyone is invited. The presentation is rescheduled from an event snowed out in January.

Reminder: There is still time to enter your bid for the silent auction of a hand-hooked rug by Dick and Sue Barr. Check it out when you next visit the library. Bids close October 20.

Gilmanton Dump Run Cafe.jpg

Dump Run Cafe

Looking for a place to meet your neighbors or find out what’s happening in town? Stop in at the Dump Run Cafe on your way to the Gilmanton Community Church on Route 107 next to Town Hall. It is open every Wednesday morning from 8-11 and serves coffee, tea and homemade pastries free of charge, though donations are welcomed.

With live music on the autoharp, guitar, mandolin and violin provided by the Dump Run Gang, it’s a very welcoming addition to your Wednesday morning dump ritual. Even if you’re not going to the dump that day, stop in, say hello and maybe join us in a tune or two.
