GYRLA Update

Submitted By Anne Kirby, President GYRLA

The Gilmanton Year-Round Library celebrated its fourth year of operation in September, proving to be a vital part of our community. Our library is a gathering place for all members of our community as each month hundreds of patrons visit the library. The library is a source of inspiration and imagination to our children. It is a source of comfort and calm to our senior citizens. It is more than just library cards, books and reading; our library is a cultural space allowing people to experience this community and beyond.

We can report good news and tell you that as a result of generous support from patrons and friends of the library, the GYRL will stay open through March 2014. But the reality is, to stay open past March 2014 we need your help. It is imperative that the library be recognized as a town-supported community resource. The Board of Directors hopes the library will be a sustainable resource for many years to come. This can only be achieved with your continued efforts, and ultimately, with you vote.

There are many ways to help make this happen over the next several months. Let the Selectmen and Budget Committee members know why the library is important to you and your family. Attend the Public Hearing and Deliberative Session and let your voice be heard. Most importantly, vote YES for town-supported funding on March 11, 2014.

As always, donations are aggressively pursued.  You can make yours today by going to www.gyrla.org and clicking on the “Donate” button.  You can contribute using your Paypal account or most credit cards.  As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, any donation is tax deductible. We are grateful to all our supporters for their generosity and look forward to continuing to serve our community.

As we look forward to the future of our town and its growth, the library will continue to serve as a vital resource for all residents. As our community evolves the library will be there to support us. With your support the Gilmanton Year-Round Library will be an integral part of our community for years to come.

Metrocast Foundation Golf Tournament

Raises $23,000 In Support Of Local Community Organizations

Gilmanton MFGT_2013_Winners.jpg

With a score of 57, John Daigneault, Jerry Driscoll, Ace Parmaley &

Bob Schwartz (pictured, l-r) took this year’s top prize.

The annual MetroCast Foundation Golf Tournament held at Lochmere Country Club on September 16 raised more than $23,000 in support of youth-serving organizations in the region.

The annual event, now in its 15th year, began as an effort to honor the memory of Robbie Mills, a 14 year-old Laconia boy who was killed in 1997 for his trail bike by two older teens (Mills’ mother is a MetroCast employee). The MetroCast event was launched a year later to support the Robbie Mills Memorial Fund, which remains a primary beneficiary of the Tournament.

As the Tournament subsequently grew in popularity,  the number of organizations supported by the fundraiser also expanded to include the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region, Greater Lakes Advocacy Center (Belknap-Merrimack Community Action Program), Spaulding Youth Center Foundation, WLNH Children’s Auction, and more.

In response to the growing need, Jim Bruder, Chairman and CEO of Harron Communications, MetroCast’s parent company, founded the MetroCast Foundation in 2007 to facilitate donations for the Tournament from video programmers and vendor partners.  In addition to 2013’s key sponsors Meredith Village Savings Bank and IDT/net2phone, more than 40 corporate organizations contributed to this year’s event.

“We are grateful for our sponsors and contributors, as well as all those who came out on a beautiful day for golf, food and fun,” said MetroCast Regional Manager, Moira Campbell.  “This valued support enabled MetroCast to continue to honor the memory of the beloved Robbie Mills and to serve worthy organizations that better our young people and the great community we call home.”

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

In a recent Letter to the Editor Belknap District 5 State Representative Dick Burchell stated that: “57 percent of the populace rejects the ACA”. This is incorrect as polling data (Kaiser Health, CNN/ORC, and others) show that at least 40% of the populace favor the ACA (Obamacare) or want it expanded, while fewer than 39% want it ended.

More importantly in New Hampshire the most recent New England College poll shows that 58% of our populace supports the ACA while 38% oppose it. Interestingly the latest NBC/Wall St. Journal poll shows that only 24% of our populace approves of Representative Burchell’s Republican Party…Hmm?!

Clearly our populace has recognized a problem and it is not the ACA (Obamacare), a quick look in the mirror would show Representative Burchell where the problem is.
