Letter To The Editor

On September 13, 2013 my husband and I had the privilege of attending 161st Police Academy’s graduation in Concord at the Training Academy.

One of the honors at every graduating class is bestowed upon a class member who has served in the military before attending and graduating from the Academy.  This candidate must show outstanding character and leadership during their training at the Academy and is chosen for a special award, the Charron-Legion Award.

Jeremy Charron was a marine who went on to become an Epsom police officer. He was killed in the line duty while serving his community.  He was a hero, as are all of our men and women who serve and protect.

This graduation was special to me.  As Concord’s American Legion Post 122 presented the Charron-Legion award, alongside the parents of Jeremy Charron, it was my privilege to take the photos of the recipient, Nashua Police Officer Julia Banks.  Officer Banks is a Marine veteran who served her country with honor and now continues to serve our State.  It was a proud moment for me to see the first female officer receive this award.

I want to say thank you to all of our veterans, no matter what age, no matter where they served, whether man or woman.  We have the bravest military in the world!  Thank you Officer Banks and to the entire 161st graduating class of the New Hampshire Police Academy.  You make us proud every day.  Stay safe and God speed.

GCC Food Pantry And Thrift Shop News

The GCC Food Pantry Committee is sponsoring a Pantry Walk on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. to help stock the shelves with much needed food and household items to assist those in need within our community.  Everyone is invited to join in this worthwhile endeavor.  For more information contact Beth Lavin at 267-1934. With the approaching holiday season the pantry will have an increased need for food donations.  We hope that you will be able to help us out again this year.

Please make note that the Thrift Shop is changing its hours for the fall/winter season.  Effective on October 14th, the Shop will NO longer be open on Mondays.  The new hours are:  Wednesday  3pm – 7pm and Saturday 10am – 2pm.  We hope this will not cause any inconvenience for our patrons.

Our 50% pants sale is still in effect through Saturday, October 5th.  All pants for women, men, junior, children and infants will be half OFF.  Do come in and check out our incredible selection of pants for the entire family and get them at 50% off.  If you haven’t been into our thrift shop before you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to get great quality clothing and wearable accessories for the entire family.  We are constantly adding new items and we welcome your donations anytime during our business hours.

We are always looking for more volunteers at the GCC Food Pantry & Thrift Shop, especially on Saturdays.  We truly would appreciate any time you can offer, even if only a couple of hours.   Would you like to help us out by volunteering?   If so, please stop by the shop or call Jane Sisti @ 364-7437.  We thank all of our current and past volunteers for helping us out with this truly great mission.

Food donations can be left in one of the collection boxes located at the Academy Building, the Gilmanton School or the Year Round Library or brought to the pantry during business hours.  Checks can be mailed to us at PO Box 6, Gilmanton Iron Works, 03837.  We are located on RT 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works, across from the Iron Works Market.  We are open on Wednesday 3pm – 7pm, and Saturday 10am – 2pm.  Parking is located in the Gilmanton Community Church parking lot just west of the shop.

Laconia Adult Education Wealth Workshop Series

Laconia Adult Education is offering a FREE Wealth Workshop Series that will run for three (3) weeks beginning on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. The Workshop will run from 6:30 – 8:30pm. You will begin to understand and learn how to put your money to work for you and make it grow.

There are many ways that you can learn about investing. This includes putting money into stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, or starting your own business. These are referred to as “investment vehicles”, which is just another way of saying “a way to invest”. It doesn’t matter which method you choose for investing your money. The goal is always to put your money to work so that it earns you an additional profit or income.

Investing is not gambling. As an investor, you do a thorough analysis or investigation before committing any money in order to make sure that there is a reasonable expectation of financial gain. Investing is a way to increase your sense of personal freedom, sense of security and ability to afford the things in life that you want now and in retirement.

The Wealth Workshop will cover such topics as Investing 101: Ideas and Strategies; Retirement Planning 101: Get Ready and Plan Now!; Wealth Planning 101: What Every Smart Women Needs To Know!; and Portfolio Management: Maximizing Gains and Reducing Risks!. The rewards for taking personal control of your finances will far outweigh the efforts that you put in. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to let banks, bosses or investment professionals invest your money in directions that you don’t understand. You are the person to know what is best for you and your money.

This Wealth Workshop Series will help you understand what investing is all about, what it means and how time earns money through compounding. It will also teach you about the building blocks of the investing world and the markets, give you insights into techniques and strategies and help you to think about which investing strategies suit you best. So, do yourself a lifelong favor and call Laconia Adult Education Office at 524-5712 to enroll in this enlightening workshop.
