GCC Food Pantry And Thrift Shop News

We at the GCC Food Pantry and Thrift Shop would like to again thank everyone who participated in and/or supported our recent Pantry Walk on October 6, 2013.  The 800 food items and $500 in money donations will be a tremendous help in assisting families in need.

Also, a hearty thank you to the Gilford  Honor Society students who donated their time on Sunday afternoon to help rake leaves, weed, cut brush and sweep sand and many other tasks needed to clean and make the outside areas of the Thrift Shop presentable. Excellent job!

In addition to providing staples on a regular basis to those in need of assistance, the GCC Food Pantry also provides Holiday Baskets in an effort to ensure that those families get to enjoy a nice holiday meal.  We could use help with the extras that go in those baskets.  We have started collecting non perishable items such as turkey gravy, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, muffin mix, pickles & olives, canned fruit, even margarine/butter as well as staples such as vegetables, sugar, cereal, juice, cocoa & coffee.

We really could use your help.  No donation is too small. Even one food item is welcomed.  Monetary donations help with perishable items.

Don’t forget that sales from our Thrift Shop help to keep food on the shelves of our Pantry.  Starting October 30, 2013 everything in the shop is 50% off.  All the winter clothing is available and new items are added on a regular basis. We have a really nice selection of good quality clothing for the entire family.

There are food collection boxes located at the Academy Building, the Gilmanton School, and the Year Round Library.  Food and clothing may also be brought to the pantry during business hours (Wednesday 3:00 – 7:00 pm or Saturday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm .) Checks can be mailed to GCC Food Pantry at PO Box 6, Gilmanton Iron Works, 03837.  New volunteers are welcome. Please consider helping a couple of hours a week or a month.  You can contact Jane Sisti @ 364-7437 or stop by the Thrift Shop for more information.

The Food Pantry and Thrift Shop is located on Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works.  Parking is available at the Gilmanton Community Church parking lot.

All Aboard the Titanic - Program at Gilmanton Year-Round Library November 14

Gilmanton titanic-sinking.jpg

Ted Zalewski presents “All Aboard the Titanic” at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library on Thursday at 7 pm on Thursday, November 14.

Ted Zalewski’s program on the Titanic, presented at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library on Thursday evening, November 14 at 7 pm, responds to people’s enduring fascination with this epic historic event.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England,  to New York. More than 1500 passages and crew died in the disaster.  Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time, one of three liners operated by the White Star Line.  It was built in Belfast, Ireland.  Her architect, Thomas Andrews, was among those lost in the sinking.

Zalewski has many pictures of passengers and crew with their personal stories, including those with New Hampshire affiliations. He moves beyond the physical facts of this very human event, exploring the personal experiences of people and emphasizing examples of individual courage and triumph.

Zalewski is a Screen Actors Guild actor, a writer, an educator and a historian. He is a longtime college and secondary school teacher who lectures on historical, literary and natural history topics.  He is nationally recognized as a foremost interpreter of Theodore Roosevelt and has presented his living history program on Roosevelt at the Smithsonian Institution conferences for educators. In 2012, he marked his fifth annual July 4th performance as Roosevelt at the Mount Washington Resort.

The program, made possible by the Humanities to Go program of the New Hampshire Humanities Council,  is free and open to the public.  Donations to support the library are gratefully accepted.  The Library is located on NH Route 140 opposite the Gilmanton School.  For information see the Library’s website: www.gyrl.org or contact the Library at [email protected].  364-2400.

Franklin VNA & Hospice Program November Events

The month of November is a busy time at Franklin VNA & Hospice. The annual wreath sale to benefit the Hospice program is in progress and will go on through November 15th. The agency has been holding this fundraiser for 8 years but this year they are changing the ordering process a bit, as Nancy Tryon, sale coordinator, explains.   “This year, we are trying to be more environmentally aware and save some trees so we are encouraging people who have internet access to order online at our website www.vnafnh.org”, Tryon explained. “The online store is very easy to use and uses PayPal for secure payments. Eliminating paper forms has also allowed us to expand the variety of items we can offer and, as an added bonus, there are 3 online items that can be shipped direct from the grower. Of course, phoning an order to me is always an option, as well.  However, direct ship is not an option on phone orders.”

As per previous years, orders will be delivered in time for Thanksgiving and will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, November 26th and Wednesday, November 27th at the Franklin VNA office.

Starting November 6th and for 6 Wednesdays thru December 18th (skipping the night before Thanksgiving), a free Hospice volunteer training will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  Wanda Belyea, Volunteer Training instructor, says “Hospice volunteers are adult men and women of all ages and backgrounds who have a desire to help their friends and neighbors and to serve the community. They are key members of the Hospice team that help our clients deal with illness, grief and loss. At the VNA, we like to say ‘Hospice volunteers can change lives – maybe even their own’.”  For more information or to register for Hospice volunteer classes, contact Beth or Bruce at Franklin VNA & Hospice at 934-3454.

The VNA will present its annual musical concert for the benefit of its Hospice Program on November 10th. This program, titled the “Gathering of Music”, is held the second Sunday of November every year but the venue changes year-to-year. This year’s program is being hosted by the First Baptist Church of Sanbornton, 17 Church Lane, Rte 127, Sanbornton.

Beth Rodd, coordinator of the event for the VNA, says “November is national Hospice month. The VNA of Franklin’s Hospice program, along with Clayton Bushman on behalf of the Lakes Association of Churches, presents this program every November to support and to honor the Hospice program. This gathering also gives us the opportunity for a memorial service to remember our Hospice patients who have died over the past year. We have invited their families to attend and will have a simple but meaningful ceremony to remember their loved ones. Any community members who have experienced a loss are also invited to participate.”  The program begins at 3:00 PM and runs for about an hour and a half. Refreshments will be served at the end of the program and a free will donation in support of the Hospice program will be taken. “This is a program for the entire community,” says Rodd, “and we hope that everyone will come and enjoy an afternoon of fine music provided by the area’s talented pool of church musicians. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.”

For more information on any of these programs or Franklin VNA in general, please call Nancy at 934-3454.

The Belknap County Republican Committee is sponsoring a Common Core Forum on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 , from 7PM to 9 PM for everyone who wants to learn of its’ origin, how it is effecting our schools and children, and what people from all over the nation are saying about it.

Listen, learn, and discuss with our amazing panel all issues pertaining to Common Core State Standards at the Beane Conference Center, 35 Blueberry Lane, in Laconia.  RSVP: [email protected]

Common Core is not a left or right or in-the-middle issue. It’s an issue effecting everyone by way of increasing taxes, lowering the educational standards for our children, and allowing the federal and state governments to intercede and micro manage education in our state.

The event is free; seating is limited; information will abound.

RSVP: [email protected]

Letter To The Editor

A recent letter to the editor chided Republicans in general, and me in particular, for being unpopular due to opposition to the Affordable Care Act.  The snapshot poll which  was referenced, following the U.S. Government shutdown,  fails to tell the whole story.  A recent ABC poll finds only a 12% approval rating for Congress as a whole.

As to the public’s approval of the Affordable Care Act, and of its author, the writer must be living in an alternate universe as poll after poll attests to their unpopularity.  Rather than concentrating on partisan sniping, it might be a good idea to work constructively in an attempt to solve the many problems besetting the country, the state and Belknap County.
