Why It Matters
The Library - a Vital Community Resource
Submitted By Board of Directors, Gilmanton Year-Round Library
Benjamin Franklin understood that for democracy to flourish, all
citizens must have access to the knowledge and information they need
to participate in that democracy. To this end, he and his
colleagues devised a plan to create a single collection of their
combined personal libraries and make these books available to the
citizens of Philadelphia. Thus was the concept of a public library
born.
Now, nearly 200 years later, the Gilmanton Year-Round Library
continues the tradition. Resources available at the library allow
every Gilmanton resident an equal opportunity to access information
regardless of socioeconomic status. Whether it is a child learning
the alphabet or a senior searching for computer assistance, the
librarians are there to help. Early childhood programs insure that
every student has the opportunity to begin their school years with
appropriate language skills. Library resources for older students
allow those with less access to information at home to keep up with
their peers. Adults benefit by finding information needed to pursue
further education, conduct job searches, and research government
programs.
Now that we’re living in the digital age, the digital divide may
have narrowed. But it has become much deeper for those who do not
have computers or internet access. As government resources become
available only through the internet (including our own town
information!), as e-commerce allows for better consumer shopping for
those big ticket purchases, as job searching and application
submission is available almost exclusively online; we are pleased
that the Gilmanton Year-Round Library makes both computers and
internet access available- for free!
As we follow in Benjamin Franklin’s footsteps, we encourage all
residents to make use of the information and programs offered by the
library. Our goal is to provide every community member with the
resources needed to reach their fullest potential.
Letter
Dear Gilmanton Residents,
The Board of Selectmen would like to save you, the taxpayer, $32,944
with no change in service.
This can be accomplished simply by replacing the vacant
firefighter/EMT position with two part-time firefighter/EMT’s.
Presently this is how the 48 hours are being covered.
This will not compromise safety, Vote no on Article 30.
Sincerely, Don Guarino
Letter To The Editor
It’s not about the money
After many discussions about the Gilmanton Fire Department and its
operation, it is clear that any disagreement is not about money.
At the Deliberative Session on Saturday 2/1/2014 the voters stated
quite clearly that they are concerned about public safety and do not
want to be put at risk while the selectmen debate costs.
The selectmen have done a good job of lowering taxes, but this is a
time when they need to listen to what the citizens of the town want.
Please support Warrant Article 30 at the polls on 3/11/14 to
maintain the current level of staffing at the Fire Department while
level-loading the budget.

Letter To The Editor
I am writing this letter out of concern for the Gilmanton Year Round
Library. As a non- reader I still realize the importance of a
library. I do read, but most of my reading is how to make wine and
manuals to repair my equipment at the vineyard. As a land owner and
resident of Gilmanton I am very excited to have such a well run,
fully operational library that is fully committed to our community.
With such a nice faculty I find it attractive to our younger
families as well as our older residents. What a great way to show
future residents and outsiders that our community cares by insuring
we continue to have such a great library and facility to offer our
community. Knowledge is a tool that should not be wasted. I will
gladly and proudly pay my taxes; whatever it takes to give our
community the year round library. If we, as residents, do not care
enough to give our best, then how can we expect younger families to
stay and mature residents to have a place to enjoy.
