A Year In Review At The

Gilmanton Food Pantry & Thrift Shop

During 2014, the Gilmanton Food Pantry & Thrift Shop has been successful  in our efforts to provide supplemental assistance to members of the Gilmanton community to ensure that every person’s basic needs are met.

We would not have been able to do so without the help and support of the greater community.  The number of persons, businesses and organizations are too numerous to list individually; however, the volunteers at the Gilmanton Food Pantry & Thrift Shop want to extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to one and all for your donations of food, money, toys, clothing and time. No donation is too small whether it be a single can of food or extra change when purchasing clothing.  Everything helps and is appreciated by those of us who help to manage the pantry & thrift shop as well as the families and children who we are able to help.

Through your  support, the Gilmanton Food Pantry was able to provide generous holiday baskets to make an otherwise simple holiday meal something special as well as school kits, gifts for children at Christmas and winter clothing for children in need.  This is in addition to monthly allotments of food throughout the year.  The sales from our thrift shop go to support these wonderful programs as well.

We thank you all for giving so generously and making everything we do at the food pantry possible.

Our next event to benefit the Food Pantry is coming up on February 14th.  There will be music and many luscious desserts. Admission is free, donations are welcome.  This will take place at the Gilmanton Community Church in Gilmanton Iron Works.  Watch for further details and save the date.

The Gilmanton Food Pantry Committee extends wishes for a peaceful, joyful, healthful and Happy New Year!

The Year- Round Library - Gilmanton’s Meeting Place

To the editor:

The Gilmanton Year-Round Library provides a central meeting place for a town so widely spread out. Besides books and magazines, DVD’s, computer use, scheduled children’s and adult programs, the GYRL hosts many group meetings in comfortable community space.

Some of the groups meeting regularly this year at the Year-Round Library have included a crafter’s group, a book club, a murder mystery group, home schoolers, and a Magic the Gathering group. In the past groups have meet for Senior movies, and to play Scrabble, bridge, and chess. If you would like to ask about your group meeting at the Library, please call 364-2400 during Library hours to speak to one of the librarians. See the website at www.gyrla.org for already scheduled meetings.

Some of best use of the Library is when friends and neighbors, who haven’t had a chance to see each other for a while, meet at the Library. Library patrons know these chances to visit with others can be the one of the Library’s strongest features. For many people the Year-Round Library has become Gilmanton’s community living room.

Support YOUR Library.  Attend the Town Meeting deliberative session on Saturday, January 31, and be sure to vote YES for Article 20 on the Town Warrant on Tuesday, March 10th at the Academy.

Letter To The Editor

When I was hired as the first librarian at the GYRL the trustees and I had several goals.  Just about all were accomplished.  We wanted to provide full service library in a relaxed environment that functioned both as a community living room and meeting space welcoming to all.  And we wanted significant collections in all media, including state of the art technology.  These goals were met and in the last four years enhanced.

We were optimistic that residents of Gilmanton would say, “I might not use this library, but many of my neighbors will and it is a service that should be offered to the community.”

It is my hope that the Gilmanton Selectmen, Budget Committee and voters support GRYL funding.  Given my experience at the GYRL and the Town I do have several items for thought.

Item 1: Library Trustees please change the name.  It has been and still is a finger in the eye to the other two libraries in town.  I like the name Gilmanton Central Library - halfway between the Corners and the Iron Works.  But I am sure other polite names will come to mind.

Item 2: Create one online catalog for all three libraries so borrowers can find the closest library that has the wanted item. Also, coordinate hours open as to maximize the number of hours at least one library will be open.  Coordinate book and other media purchases to get the broadest collection possible. This might mean a coordination of funding requests from the Town and appeals for private funding

Item 3: Remember libraries are cooperative, not competitive, organizations.
