Year-Round Library News
The Gilmanton Year-Round Library is pleased to announce that it has
received a Kids, Books and Arts grant for their summer reading
program. This program will enable the library to include a
professional presenter to perform at the library during the reading
program.
The summer reading program will kick-off July 5th at 6p.m with a
performance by basketball artist Ilze Luneau. She will amaze
you with her never-before-seen basketball handling tricks with
three, four, five, and even six basketballs at once. Ilze
performs regularly at the Basketball Hall of Fame and has appeared
on the Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres shows.
Kids, Books and Arts is a cooperative project of the New Hampshire
State Library and CHILIS, the Children’s Librarians of New
Hampshire. These grant opportunities allow public libraries to
provide quality arts experiences for the children and families in
their communities; while at the same time promoting summer reading.
Supported by businesses and foundations, these grants are awarded to
community libraries with limited resources to help foster quality
children’s programming.
Kids, Books and the Arts began in 1994 with a grant from the New
Hampshire State Council on the Arts to the New Hampshire State
Library. Its objective was to encourage arts programming by
introducing and encouraging artists to adapt their art to a thematic
program of interest to children; thereby strengthening the
partnership between the arts community and public libraries.
Since the inception
of the program in 1994, the State Library has awarded more than
$277,000 to libraries and communities throughout the state.

Parlor Music In 19th Century New England At Gilmanton

presents “Parlor Music in 19th Century New England” at the Gilmanton
Historical Society on Tuesday, June 28, 7:30 pm, Old Town Hall,
Gilmanton Iron Works.
On Tuesday, June 28, the Gilmanton Historical Society will present
Pleasures of the Parlor, a one-hour lecture/concert by mezzo-soprano
Marya Danihel that vividly portrays home music-making in Victorian
America. The program, at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works,
begins at 7:30. Social hour and refreshments begin at 7 pm.
The Society’s museum in the basement of Old Town Hall, will be open
at 7 pm.
The presentation is
illustrated with live performance, visual images, and excerpts from
the unpublished memoir of Sarah Goodwin, wife of New Hampshire’s
Civil War governor. “These charming songs reveal much about the
inner lives of our Victorian forbears while reflecting developments
in the culture at large: the waning influence of England, the influx
of immigrants, and the growth of social movements such as temperance
and abolition,” says Ms. Danihel.
A graduate of the
University of New Hampshire and Smith College, Ms. Danihel began her
performing career in Boston and came to specialize in
lecture-concerts on historic popular music. Sponsors of her programs
have included the Longfellow National Historic Site, The Museum of
Our National Heritage, the Portsmouth Athenaeum, and many other New
England museums and historic societies. Funding for the Gilmanton
program has been provided by New Hampshire Humanities.
This program is the second in the Gilmanton Historical Society’s
2016 summer series. Programs are offered on the 4th Tuesday of
each month, May through September. In July we explore
historic homes of Gilmanton. In August Pat Clarke tells us
about Gilmanton in World War II. On Saturday morning, August
13, the Society will lead a tour of Gilmanton’s first village, Lower
Gilmanton, including the Kelley Corner School and the First Baptist
Church. The final program in September brings a tribute to
Sarah Josepha Hale.
The programs are free and open to the public. The hall is
handicapped accessible. The Society’s Museum is open at 7 pm before
the program, and Saturdays during the summer from 10 am until noon.
Donations to support the work of the Society are always welcome.
Gilmanton Iron Works Library Book & Bake Sale
The Gilmanton Iron
Works Library will hold a Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, June 25
from 9:30 to noon. This historic library, located at 10 Elm
Street, will offer special books, videos, and DVDs, as well as a
wide variety of baked goods, sweets, and other treats.
“Many people return every year to our Book and Bake Sales,” explains
Susannah Chance, president of the Gilmanton Iron Works Library
Association. “They come looking for a favorite book or back
for a treat they enjoyed last year. The variety of goodies our
volunteers and neighbors donate for the sale is always amazing.
Our book and bake sales are our primary fundraisers and we very much
appreciate the community’s support. This will be the first of four
sales scheduled this summer and fall.”
The Gilmanton Iron Works is open on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – noon,
Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. – noon, and Wednesdays 4-6 p.m. Beginning
July 5, the library will host a Children’s Story Hour at the library
on Tuesdays from 10-11 a.m.
A public library serving the community since 1916, the Gilmanton
Iron Works Library is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. A small group of volunteers maintains the building and
the library’s extensive collection of books and DVDs. For more
