Gilmanton Cupola “Tops” It All
Recently John Dickey and Israel Willard of the Gilmanton Cupola
Committee went to visit Steve Fifield of Fifield Building
Restoration in Canterbury. Steve is patiently and expertly restoring
the sadly missed cupola that once sat atop the Academy Building in
Gilmanton Corners.
Steve has painstakingly created 8 totally new columns of cedar;
each column is approximately 14 feet long with half the length
turned to match the original columns. The metal roofing has
been removed and rotten boards and roof supports replaced. The
new roof will be leaded copper, painted red and leaded at the seams.
Once fully restored the cupola will be placed atop the Academy
building.
Thanks to the efforts of John Dickey, Steve Bedard and Rachel
Hatch an L-Chip Grant Application has been submitted. L-Chip
staff has scheduled a visit on Friday, October 22nd, at Noon to view
the Academy Building; bringing Gilmanton one step closer in the
process of possibly receiving a grant for remaining costs of the
restoration.
The Cupola Committee is very pleased to have Fifield Building
Restoration doing the restoration and is looking forward to the
cupola being reset atop the Academy.
