Community Citizen

Pictured above with their daughters Kali and Fiona, Dr. Kevin Mara and Kate Mara are the recipients of Chichester Grange’s Community Citizen award for 2010. In connection with his veterinary practice, Dr. Mara works with the Police Departments of Chichester and Epsom, looking after police dogs and tending to animal emergencies. He also serves on the Chichester Planning Board. Kate Mara is a reading teacher at Chichester Central and is always willing to help students of any age with their academic problems. She is very involved with the Drama Club at Chichester Central and with the Pembroke Academy Drama Club and the Pittsfield Scenic Theater as well. The entire family supports and participates in Chichester Old Home Day events.

Chichester Grange held its Community Awards Night on May 5 at the Grange Hall. Grange Master Anne Boisvert gave a brief introduction to Grange customs and conducted the opening ceremony. In addition to the Community Citizen Award presented to Dr. Kevin Mara and Kate Mara as a family, the following awards were presented.

Postal Worker to Jonathan B. Ward, a rural carrier for the Pittsfield Post Office. Jon has worked there for five years since completing a twenty-year career in the US Navy. He can be counted on to always be on time and to lend a hand anywhere or anytime needed.

Police Officer to Robert W. Mulligan, a part-time officer with the Chichester Police Department. Since being hired in 2006 Officer Mulligan has exceeded all expectations, filling extra shifts and stepping in to handle prosecution for the department.

Robert Mulligan is employed full-time by New Hampshire Marine Patrol. As he was teaching a boating class in connection with that job, his wife accepted the award for him.

Firefighter to Edward R. Millette of the Chichester Fire Department. Ed is a Chichester native with EMT-B certification and the rank of Fire Captain. He currently holds the position of President of the Chichester Fire Fighters Association, which makes him very involved in events like the Mother’s Day Breakfast and Old Home Day. When he was a teen-ager Ed mapped all the town cemeteries as an Eagle Scout project.

Educator to Denise A. Mason, a biology teacher at Pittsfield Middle High School. An Epsom resident, Denise has taught at PMHS for three years. She brings considerable education and experience in the nutrition and medical fields to her teaching, and she is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education from Franklin Pierce.

The Outstanding Youth Award was presented to Patrick Jarvis, a Chichester native. Although Patrick was home schooled for the first eight grades, he was active on Chichester sports teams. He is now a sophomore at Concord Christian Academy where he is a hard working, diligent honor roll student who is also involved in athletics. Patrick’s teachers appreciate the character qualities he exhibits daily in building a caring school community and recognize his strong leadership potential. Patrick is also very active in his church, serving as Game Leader for Vacation Bible School and participating in work-days. He has also studied piano for several years.

Among the Grangers, the award recipients, and their support teams, there were over forty people in the hall. Many of them stayed to enjoy refreshments and fellowship and to help put the chairs away.
