Commissioner Of Education Barry Visits Chichester Central

Whitney Moses describes math palletts during RtI time.

Dr Barry (center) and Elaine McNulty (NH State RtI Coordinator) met with Grade 4 teacher Tony Cipriano who demonstrated Aimsweb probes on the iPad.

On April 11th Commissioner of Education Dr. Virginia Barry visited the Chichester Central School.

Chichester was selected by the State of NH as a Response to Intervention (RtI) Showcase School. Chichester’s RtI model includes regular and systematic assessment of student progress, tiered levels of targeted instruction, and monthly meetings in which a classroom teacher and interventionists meet together to review the data of each child to insure that growth is taking place. As a result of this school-wide system, Chichester continues to make Adequate Yearly Progress and remains off of the "In Need of Improvement" list.

Dr. Barry began her visit with an overview of how the process started, professional learning community meetings, the role of data team, and the types of instruction that happens at the three tiers. She visited students in grades 2, 4, and 5 during RtI instructional time. Tiered groups in Grade 5 were crafting Museum Boxes in the technology lab, 2nd graders were using netbooks to complete IXL math strands, 4th graders were working in groups and being progress monitored, and 2nd graders were engaged in targeted math center activities.

Dr. Barry was very interested in the individual Aimsweb progress monitoring probes that were conducted. She was impressed with how technology was used to retrieve results immediately and shared with students by teachers so that meaningful feedback could be shared in a timely manner.

What a pleasure it was to host Dr. Barry for the afternoon. Chichester has consulted with 7 other NH schools, as well as a school in New York and another in Washington, DC., regarding how they might move forward with RtI program development and implementation. Chichester Central is also preparing for a visit from representatives from the National RtI Center in Washington in late May.
